Black metal really changed my life.
before it i was wondering arround life with no sense at all.
It takes me to another place
a place where i wan to be when ever i want to be,
and it takes apart allthe problems forlittle they are for a few mins....
the first band i think it was Dimmu Borgir that got me int to Black metal.
Then i wentunderground with Bathory and Emperor.
When i heard this burzum song called "Key to the gate"
i fell in love for this band.
the atmospheric feeling of the guitar was Unexplainable.
then it was
Mayhem
Immortal
Uruk-Hai
Darkthrone

my life changed a lot since i started on black metal.

well, i think what got me into metal was metallica. i remember listening on the radio singing "nothing else matters" going, "who is is this hot new band". lol, im so silly.
since then i have progressed to many more things, darker, heavier, faster, but still my 1st love is metallica

and i would be upset if this came as a surprise to anybody

Nightwish were really the first band that got me into metal. First song I heard by them was End of All Hope in a Final Fantasy AMV thing. From there I listened to more Nightwish, which branched off into Sonata Arctica, and then it spiraled on. Made my life a lot better ^_^

well, i guess what started me down the path of darker heavier metal must have been disturbed and slipknot. they have spun me off into all that remains, and alot of the bands with harsh vocals

Well, mine are:

Ayreon (There are no words to explain how i feel everytime i listen to any of the Ayreon Albums)

Black Sabbath (Cause i've heard black sabbath since i was a baby.
Funny Anecdote: I remember my dad holding my hand and singing with me "Look into my eyes you'll see who I am, My name is Lucifer please take my hand")

Dio (<3 u know how much i love Ronnie James Dio)

Death (First i didnt like Death Metal, then i heard them)

Epica (Yes, Im gay but face it, they are good.)

Blackmore's Night (Not metal, but got me into a whole new world of medieval music and happiness)

Slayer ('cause God hates us allllll (8) )

Warning (just listen to the lyrics)

Opeth (no need to explain)

and of course Saturnus

Its actually kinda hard to pick, I mean there are a lot of bands, and there are a lot of emotions that comes with every single one of them.

Yeah dude, Ayreon's awesome. I dont know if u got to read anything about it, its Arjen Lucassen's project and on every album he gets new people to play with him. He has like 4 projects, my favorites are Ayreon and Star One.

Look, he has played with:

Bruce Dickinson
Iron Maiden

Daniel Gildenlöw
Pain of Salvation

Devin Townsend
Devin Townsend Band, Strapping Young Lad<

Andi Deris
Helloween

Fabio Lione

George Oosthoek
ex-Orphanage

Hansi Kürsch

James LaBrie
Dream Theater

Jonas Renkse
Katatonia

Mikael Åkerfeldt
Opeth

Michael Romeo

The Human Equation has a lot of emotions, the story is crazy..

The album explores the idea of psychological rebirth, and follows the story of a man who, after falling into a coma following a car accident, is confronted with his past, his emotions,
and his current situation as he lays trapped inside his own mind. The
circumstances surrounding the accident are mysterious, as the man
("Me", portrayed by James LaBrie)
ploughed into a tree on a deserted road in broad daylight. Following
this, he slips into a twenty-day coma, with each day represented by a
single song. Each song follows a slightly different format, though
there are major common themes, such as the presence of Me's manifest
emotions in his dream world (including Fear portrayed by Mikael Åkerfeldt, Reason portrayed by Eric Clayton, and Pride portrayed by Magnus Ekwall); the presence of Me's Wife (Marcela Bovio) and Best Friend (Arjen Anthony Lucassen) at his bedside; and the past events that Me is forced to reflect on.
The plot builds from Me’s early broken state to his eventual rebirth
as a new and better man. His own dark past; in which he suffered
beneath an abusive Father (Mike Baker), was driven to become merciless by school bullies,
and eventually betrayed his closest friend for his own benefit; is
intertwined with the plot surrounding Wife and Best Friend, eventually
revealing the cause of the accident: Me had witnessed the two sharing
an intimate moment,
and had swerved his car into a tree in his despair. The three
eventually come clean and forgive each other, leading Me to conquer his
negative emotions and escape his nightmarish prison.
The story terminates with a sci-fi twist in contrast to the psychodrama
of the album, but reminiscent of earlier Ayreon releases. The final
song cuts suddenly to silence as it reaches a crescendo, and a
computerised voice announces the shut-down of the Dream Sequencer. The voice of Forever then speaks the final words of the album, tying its events into the overall Ayreon plot that began with The Final Experiment.
I just get excited lol

For me it's got to be Lord Gore. For the first death metal band I ever heard it almost made me piss myself with admiration for that INCREDIBLE vocalist.

I suppose Psycroptic for tech-death did the same for me. I used to love them so much before they got rid of Chalky.

Byd, this is how it starts, you know. One day it's "I like Blink 182", the next it's "I think I like men".

I've heard rock and metal music as far back as I can remember. My path in music is long and complicated but goes something like this.
Megadeath / Judas Priest / Iron Maiden
Disturbed / Slipknot
Cradle of Filth / Dimmu Borgir
Metalcore
Death Metal / Black Metal
And then I just started expanding and now I listen to a very wide variety.

Thanks for mentioning Graveworm, that band rocks. I've found that many people who listen to death metal but not black metal enjoy Marduk.

To my ears Graveworm is more of black metal towards symphonic/power metal while Cradle of filth is more black metal towards symphonic/goth metal (increasingly with time). Cradle of Filth has also done a Fear of the Dark cover. I bet a shitload of bands have covered that song.

Edit: Actually I change my mind. I can see more similarities than previously, not that many but some.

Killswitch Engage
In Flames
All that Remains
Sonic Syndicate

Can't go wrong with

Metallica
Disturbed/Drowing Pool (until they got played over and over and over lol)
slipknot has some decent stuff
Hatebreed

But my first half of the list I think I like every song ever made by any of those bands lol

All those bands left a huge impression on me. They split my eardrums in two.
