We got any fans here? I personally think its really, really awesome stuff. I've been getting into it a lot in the past few days. One of the most creative and incredible forms of black metal, and really, really great to listen to through a nice set of speakers alone - creates an amazing atmosphere. Bands like Blut Aus Nord, Xasthur, Striborg, Leviathan, even some early Burzum - it's just incredible.

Definitely. I of course know Xasthur, Leviathan, and Burzum. The rest I don't really remember the names of but I've heard a decent amount of ambient black metal. The last song on my first song list was a depressive black metal song. There is quite a bit of variety in the subgenre. I'll be on the look out for some cool stuff. My favorite Xasthur songs are "Dreams Blacker than Death" and "Keeper of Sharpened Blades and Ominous Fates".

Do you know Evoken? It's not black metal but fans of ambient black metal may like the equivalent for death metal, "Funeral Doom".

Nortt is worth a listen.

*Checking out Blut Aus Nord right now, and not regretting it.

I'll check out Evoken - not heard a whole lot of doom (most doom just bores me tbh) but funeral doom is always good stuff so I'll have a listen.

I think you should DEFINATELY check out Striborg - one of the best bands in the genre.

This is probably my new favourite dark/ambient/black band (as recommended by a friend from another forum) - Ghoul. From what I can piece together, it's a British band formed by these two crazy nuts (one of which is now in prison for vandalism and arson) which is now defunct, but their recordings are still on MySpace. They're only hard copy release is a tape recording limited to 150 copies, so you'll be hard pressed to find anything for real, and torrents are pretty shallow too. Sad

Check it out, everyone.

I liked Striborg. Ghoul was okay but I didn't really get that into it.
1) Not very dark.
2) Kind of simplistic.
3) The thought of 2 losers trying to be special is kind of annoying.

The good is...
1) Cool atmosphere if you put your own effort into it.
2) The live footage I saw of the band performing had a cool room. Not sure if that was the black metal ghoul or the death metal ghoul though...

i hate to **** over everbodys point all the time. but can some explain how Ghoul is metal. wasnt the instruments in that a synth or two and a bass? if that? maybe a drum kit or sth. it was very,......well....depressing for one thing. i guess thats what they were trying to do

oh, and srs kudos for releasing only a couple tracks straight to casset. that is legit dude

Byd, this is how it starts, you know. One day it's "I like Blink 182", the next it's "I think I like men".

The ghoul one is a mix of ambient and black metal you really have to listen to the entire tape to enjoy the full effect. Some parts are mixed some are full ambient or full bm.( Yes I am the one that recomended them). They released one very limited demo and then two more demos after they went defunct a friend of mine's label decided to get into contact with them about a full release of both demo's. And yes they have a far different asthetic than you do I assume and they prefered to to release only on tapes. And yes the band disbanded when he was sent to jail. It's not very strange for bands to only record a small bit of material and move on or something break it up.

In other news Alatyr are another excellent band though sadly defunct after one album.

I've always thought of Draconian as doom myself, but if you like ambient black they aren't a big jump. I like em. Nortt for sure are good as well.

Yes dark ambience is nice as well something that grows on you a bit though and not metal but still in the dark realm in my opinion.
