PostSubject: The Ultimate Band   Thu May 21, 2009 2:58 pm

The premise is simple. Take your favourite musician for each instrument, list them together and youíve created your ultimate band. Mine would be as follows:

Male Vocals: Axl Rose (Guns Ďní Roses)

This is based more on current preference than my all time choice, though his inclusion is also predicated by the fact that massive twat though he is, no one else sounds like him, and to be unique is not a common thing in metal.

Female Vocals: Julie Kiss (To-mera)

Just listen, no explanation should be required: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU26_Z5_YLo

Lead Guitar: Jeff Loomis (Sanctuary, Nevermore, Solo)

I seem to keep breaking my own rules, as Loomis is not my favourite guitarist: this choice is based on my personal interest in seeing what his trademark down-tuned riffarama would sound like trading off against Axlís vox.

Rhythm Guitar: James Hetfield (Metallica)

At last, an actual favourite choice. The creative force behind Metallica, a very tight player and anyone who writes songs like Dyers Eve is obviously worthy of a place in this esteemed group.

Bass: Steve DiGiorgio (Death, Sadus, Autopsy, Testament, Iced Earth, Control DeniedÖ the list goes on)

Another favoured musician: Steveís technical ability is mind boggling (perhaps why he is so in demand), but he doesnít allow that to get in the way of laying down a bit of the good olí groove thang.

Drums: Brann Dailor (Mastodon)

Iím becoming habitual! Brann isnít my preferred drummer (stand up David Murray), but like Axl, he is unique, which as a drummer is something truly exceptional. His snare heavy style is full of rolls, and itís remarkable how much definition and diversity he can get out of one piece of the kit. He doesnít lack for cymbal and tom play either.

To say Iím more into black and death metal, this list has turned out remarkably mainstream, but still full of talent. Runners up are (Male Vocals: Iuri Sanson of Hibria, Female Vocals: Sphinx of Ram-Zet, Lead Guitar: Steve Vai, Rhythm Guitar: Nikos Kevorkian of Symbyosis, Bass: Steve Hariss of Iron Maiden, Drums: Dave Murrary of Sculptured)

Male Vocalist - Jim Morrison (revived)
Jim is the most kickass vocalist//lyricist ever, from the legendary band The Doors. R.I.P

Female Vocalist - Annete Olzon
NIGHTWISH!!! I love Tarja, but here classical style wouldn't fit as well.

Lead Guitar - Steve Vai
ummmmmm "For the Love of God"? 'nuff said.

Rhythm (2nd lead) - Alexi Laiho
CoB & Sinergy are awesome! Plus, he could take the lightning fast parts, and Vai could take the awesome melodic, slower parts.

Drums - Mike Portnoy
Dream Theater es amazing.

Keyboards - Janne "Warman" Wirman
Honestly, who else would I pick? Herman Li?

Mine's all over the place.

Vocals: Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering)

Guitar 1: Brian May (Queen) My favorite guitarist of all time. Coolest guitar tone EVER. I'd kill for one of his modified vintage Voxes.

Guitar 2: Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad, solo)
I'm probably gonna catch hell for this. A really diverse guitarist, from his "wall of sound" approach with SYL, to his clean tones in his solo project. Plus, I think only someone with a presence such as May's could even hope to play lead over Devin.

Bass: Reverend Jim (Sixty Watt Shaman)
Stoner metal always has the coolest bassists. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTrD_OIsPMs

Drums: Larry Herweg (Pelican)
This one's hard for me since I don't know much about drums. He's probably not the best technically, but I really like his style, and he's from Chicago, so I'll go with him.

May gets my points for the riff in Stone Cold Crazy. But onto my band. I think I"m going to do a death metalish band.

Lead Vocals: Frank Mullen (Suffocation)- Frank is my favorite death metal vocalist. I really like his rhythm and phrasing. Also in my opinion he is one of the only truely scary death metal vocalist. He just has a nice eerie tone to his rasps and I like it.

Lead Guitar+Backing Vocals: Chuck Schuldiner (Death) Do i even really need to say anything with this one?

Rhythm Guitar: Josh Elmore (Cattle Decapitation) Josh is one of my favorite death metal guitarists and can write some excellent riffs. Both quick grindy ones and some more classic death oriented. He can hold Cattle Decap on his own as the only guitarist so I think that gives him chops enough to play with Chuck.

Bass: Shane Embury (Napalm Death) It was a very close one between Shane and Alex Webster and for all of his talent I really think that Shane wins out as a good rhythm and power house bassist to counter Chuck's outstanding guitar work. With both Chuck and Alex in the same band their talent might conflict a bit.

Drums: Max Duhamel (Kataklysm) I could have picked some more obvious drummers like Christy, Inferno, or Flo all of whom I considered. But I decided on someone more solid than a technical genious to balance with Shane on the heavy end of this band.

i do it with slayer

well, my band

Vocals
Christian Alvestam (Scar symmetry Miseration.....a crap ton more)

Backup vocals
there is no way in hell this guy needs backup. so im not going to give him any. he can sing just about any style he pleases. i think he possesses the most range from a vocalist i have ever heard

Guitar
ummm FVCKING Jonh petrucci. not even a choice.

Rhythm Guitar
Andrew Tapley, or that other dude from The Human Abstract

Bass
Late great Cliff burton

Drums
I dont know may drummers, but if i had to pick, i would say the drummer form Avenged Sevenfold, BUT ONLY from the album called Desecrate Through Reverence. Other noteables is the guy from The Faceless and the guy from All That Remains

Keyboards
COB guy was picked.....and i already have an amazing line up, and since im more of a guitar guy myself, ill pick Jens Johansson from Stratovarius, i wouldnt want the keyboards competeing with the guitar, not like that is even remotely possibly when you have petrucci as your lead

Very nice choice. I would've gone for Anneke, but I wanted someone with a slightly more operatic style. I don't think people realise just how much bands like Nightwish owe Mandylion: an underrated and influencial masterpiece.

A7X don't have an album called that as far as I know unless it's a demo. Also no need to be ashamed I've been an A7X fan since I was like 14 and the entire band put together doesn't have the ammount of talent the Rev has in one arm. He's a brilliant drummer imho.

I don't rate him much, but he is a decent guy: I had to agree with his interview for Some Kind of Monster when he said it was really fvcking weak the band couldn't sort out their own problems.
