PostSubject: Shining   Fri May 29, 2009 9:27 pm

I never really paid that much attention to Shining but just recently I looked into them some.

First of all...I really can't get over the music. I simply love the music. I don't really know what else to say lol. It just kicks my ass when it wants to and the slower parts really paint the atmosphere. The part of the fifth album that has the girl crying was kind of hard to stomach but I'm getting used to it.

The style of the band reminds me of Mayhem a lot. They are very serious, too serious, about what they do (well at least the singer is). It has a very raw and "realistic" nature (as opposed to something like Xasthur, which is surreal, or something like Watain, which is just classical black metal theatrics). The most significant similarity though is how incredibly negative it is. Listen to "Ordo Ad Chao" and you'll see what I mean. The vocals are similar in a way as well.

Personally I find some of the lyrics kind of corny ("This confession has meant nothing," then why did you make it?). Obviously there is a lot of fanaticism surrounding the singer which I find interesting but I don't contribute to it (of course). I lack the ability to connect emotions to philosophy so of course I miss out on a large part of human nature. With that said, doing my best to visit the emotional world, I am strongly suspicious of hypocrisy. He seems like a pretty well-off person to me. When his family died he went out to "lose himself," he inflicts pain on himself not because of any kind of emotional pain but simply because he likes to reinforce negativity, yet he is very egocentric and wants "his pain to be felt by others." Well I bet a lot of people in the world would love that to be the case, such as those who suffer from cluster headaches among millions of others who go through way more than imaginable by someone who simply endures self-administered cuts. But I give the benefit of the doubt and just take the ideology as an artistic aside.

Anyways the music...

New album June 15th. It will be cool to hear it.

Yeah me too. I really love the start of the song too. I listened to this album right after listening to the others and it was like damn the party isn't over, it just gets even more intense with the way it starts off.

I have to say that is probably one of the best black metal bands i have heard. The guitar's aren't so distorted and the vocalist sounds pretty good. Thank you for sharing. I'm listening to the second song now

This is like the opposite of Ulver's "Nattens Madrigal". The band focuses a lot on the Bass and of course "Nattens Madrigal" didn't even have a bass. The folks from Ulver also tend to be a bit more classy, loving (modern), and sophisticated while this band is pretty raw, hateful, and emotional.

And Ulver had a lot of distortion (Century Media was pretty upset lol). "We have expensive tastes." -that's what happened to the money that was supposed to go into the production lol.

I used to really really like Shining but I actually haven't listened to them in a long time. Yeah the vocalist is a bit of a douch but he's good. There's a canadian band called Snowfall that I like alot better that are somewhat similar but far more rough.

Haha wow that sucks. Their Forest of Eld demo is very good imo. Their debut is pretty good. They have a new album out but as of yet I've neglected to get it.

"This recording was perhaps the most difficult of ours to finish. The
sessions started in late 2005 and ended in fall of 2006. Countless amounts
of dollars were spent financing the trips so we could record together, and
also on the amount of intoxicants we consumed. At this time we both were
consuming large amounts of Alcohol and the potent, heroin-like opiate known
as Dilaudid, regularly. Our state of mind was very bad during this
recording, as both of our lives had turned to **** in some way or another,
and we were left as decay worshiping addicts with nothing left to live for.
Everything around us was falling apart, so we gathered to create a musical
testimony to the empty black god that is nihilism. Some songs on this
record sound kind of strange, such as "From black to brown" or "uit
de baarmoeder gerukte boskebouter". It must be said that these songs
themselves are very much commentaries on state of black metal,
and some humor can be found in them, as well as some experimentation.
Other songs such as March Of The Tyrants and Forest Of Eld show a new
avenue for snowfall... One we intend to explore greatly in the coming future."

I found this quote for the album information at metal-archives. Thought that might be interesting to read.

Shining and Xasthur are pretty different to me. Xasthur is very other-worldly while Shining is very dark and is more tied to reality under a very negative lens. I like them both in different ways. If I had to choose one I would also choose Xasthur though because at heart everything is abstract to me.

LOL I read some interview of the singer of Shining and the guy was being serious and asking good questions. Suddenly at the end he asked a few totally ridiculous questions, starting with this gem:

Lemming or goat?

GD note: No reply.

Xasthur and Shining are kinda like the opposite sides of the same coin really. Same sort of "idea" I guess or general style but different ways of going at it. Have you tried Striborg VR? I couldn't remember if I have suggested them or not.

Yeah dude I heard like one song really briefly and never got around to them. I know that sounds crazy but I tend to do that a lot. I'm definitely going to check them out though. Damn at the moment I forget what my description I created for them was (I keep track of bands by creating descriptions).

Cool, I really like the album Solitude myself and the new album Perceiving the World With Hate was very good as well.
