PostSubject: Bands that shaped me   Sun May 31, 2009 1:51 am

Here is a list of bands that aren't necessarily my favorite, but that I feel contributed to my musical taste as a whole or that have influenced my life in other ways.

The Doors (I know, I'm a broken record)

From the moment I first heard a song by them, I was mesmerized. It was so different. I listened to more and more, and loved all of it. These guys changed my life, and that is not being over dramatic. I wasn't even in to music that much before I heard these guys, but after I did, I was addicted to music. I listened to more and more of everything, and I feel The Doors is probably the most important band I have ever listened to.

Clutch
These guys were one of the bands that formed my love for heavy metal and blues rock. Their sound is super unique and I immediately fell in love with it and wanted more. I learned about these guys awhile after I got into music as a whole, but they still really shaped me. I first heard them on Sirius radio with the track "10001110101" and immediately went out and bought the albums "Robot Hive/Exodus" and "Pitchfork & Lost Needles"

Dio
this band was one of the first old metal bands I listened to, right when I got into music. From here, I started listening to all things metal, from Judas Priest to Quiet Riot. I listened to the "Holy Diver" and "Last in Line" albums over and over again, and loved every track on both of them. Dio was very important in forming my current music tastes in heavy metal music.

CKY

I know a lot of you don't like these guys at all, but this was another band I discovered early on that I loved immediately. After I fell in love with The Doors, I found these guys. When I wasn't listening to The Doors, I was looping the album "Infiltrate: Destroy: Rebuild". I believe this band was one of the bands that was really important in introducing me to heavy metal music.

CCR is amazing. I absolutely love their music! And of course all of the great thrash artists.... I wish I could have experienced those bands when they were in their prime. I love a lot of the new music now, but man the old music.... the best that ever was.

You know what I love about old bands like that? When they recorded, they recorded on four tracks. When you bought an album, you were pretty much buying a live album. Like The Doors, their first album was all first takes for the most part. Today, they have tons of tracks for over dubbing, which can be useful, but is often abused. And back then, it seems like artists played more because they loved the music. Mainstream music nowadays is all about the money like you said. That's why there are so many bands that sound alike

KISS

I don't think people realise just how good they were. They perfectly mixed pop and rock, their drummer could sing too, Paul and Ace were excellent writers and had some damn cool tunes. As the first band I really got into, it's fair to say they started me on the path of rock n' roll and the reason I picked up a guitar.

Iron Maiden

My dad handed me a copy of Killers, and thus was I welcomed to the world of metal. If you don't like Maiden, you don't like metal.

Death

Best band in the history of the world ever. Chuck is my hero and Death was the band that opened me up to extreme metal, for which I am eternally grateful. Not to mention the talent that has played in the band over the years.

Mozart

Possibly the most talented writer/composer/muscian to ever live. His work is grand, and compositions magical. Very powerful and reminds me of the scope music can have.

Immortal

Making black metal accessable. Abbath is a riff master and this band is the reason I got into black metal.

Neil Diamond

Genius, in so much as their very simple, but makes his point. His voice is so rich as well, very easy to relax to and made me aware that not all pop music sucks.

I'm tired of posting links, though that's only about 2% of the bands I would've liked to list...

Metal-wise, the most important are the 2 "holy trinities" of melodeath and doom respectively:

In Flames/At The Gates/Dark Tranquility
Anathema/Paradise Lost/My Dying Bride

Plus:

Pelican
Isis
Rotting Christ
Boris
early Napalm Death
Carcass
Skepticism

Lamb of God- Though not one of my favorite bands per say they were the band that first introduced me to extreme music and I have to thank them for that.

Judas Priest- Priest kinda played the same role for me as LoG in the classic metal area and are still a favorite of mine.

Dimmu Borgir- Though they don't get much playtime now Dimmu were sort of like my Immortal and opened up the idea of black metal and more "evil" sounding music. I kinda laught now when I get the image of 14 year old me going into bestbuy without my mom and sneaking buying a copy of Stormblast MMV and hiding lol.

Suffocation- Suffocation really opened up the world of death metal to me. I had listened to and enjoyed very few dm bands until I at 1 in the morning saw Suffocations Abomination Reborn video. Just everything about it was amazing to me and I went and picked up the CD.

Iron Maiden- More than any other single band I think Iron Maiden really was the band that inspired me to "sell my soul to metal" so to speak. I was a metal fan until I listened to Powerslave then I really became a metalhead.

There are so many great Iron Maiden songs I forget about simply because of the fact that there are so many hits

Truthfully, I have two opinions about kiss. One, I love them because they made pretty good music and did it in a way that wasn't overpopularized like Miley Cyrus bullshit. And two, Why do they dress up? And whats with all the stage props?

Because it was part of their gimmick. They wanted to give a full show with props and costumes and the full 9 yards so to speak. It works with some bands and it doesn't with others and Kiss made it work. As a King Diamond fan I can really appreciate the full use of props and costume and Kiss were certainly ace at it. Cooper may have been a bit better but it's a close run.

King Diamond is totally awesome with the costumes and props. It reminds me a lot of opera and I dig it. They used to be my top5.

I pretty well replaced god in my life with King Diamond. No I'm not a creepy psycho stalker fan why would you ask *twitch*
Thats why I didn't even bother to really put King in the list of bands that shaped me because like Dies Irae is with Death, to me King Diamond/Mercyful Fate just the absolute greatest bands ever without a doubt and no one can tell me any different because I won't listen. It just goes above and beyond anything I could ever want in a band so yeah thats my blurb on KD.

GWAR are the without a doubt I admit the best stage band in the world. Their songs suck so bad imo but the show is insane as hell so I have to hand that one to you.

Well, I love Kiss, and I think mostly they were going for music and stage presence. They wanted an amazing live spectacle, as well as cool music. For them, live shows were everything. They dressed up just because they thought it was cool and they thought that it would make the live show even cooler. But, I have to agree that it got to a point where the music was secondary to everything else (i.e disco album).
