PostSubject: Feel like learning about existentialism?   Mon Jun 22, 2009 2:11 pm

Existentialism denies essential human nature; each of us creates our own essence through free action. It is are unsympathetic to science. Experiences interest existentialists as they study self definition. Soren Kierkegaard and Jean-Paul Sartre are both existentialists with opposing views. Kierkegaard believes that we must make God happy, Sartre believes that humans are individuals who have our own essence.

Kierkegaard wants to find a truth for himself, to find the idea for which he lives and dies by. He wants clarification of what to do, and on action. He also wanted to know what it meant to be a Christian and how to bridge the gap between himself and the creator. Decision making is a serious action to him, and he believes Christianity is the only cure for the agony of choice making. He believes to exist is to become a self. Everyone has to struggle and face opposition and to experience passion.

John-Paul Sartre felt that a belief in God was not possible. He believes humans are to be what we choose. He believes if God existed, then he could have made a nature for humans, but since he doesn't humans choose for ourselves who to be. There are no set of norms or right behaviour, we are uniquely ourselves. He believes that we have an essence. Essence is the defining factor that makes a thing exist. Reality exists in a phenomena.

Hey I love that movement! Dostoievsky (spellcheck?) its like the greatest example ever. In High School we were supposed to study most of these movements but related to literature. It's totally awesome. You can really enjoy it.

These guys are philosophers
As far as literature goes
I am a big fan of Samuel Beckett, I think he was a writer in the 1950's who wrote about pretty much nonsense until you look into it. Not sure if I've shown you his play entitled Play where the actor who plays Snape is in it and hes in a jar with two others discussing how an affair turned out. Or Waiting For Godot
Great stuff
