PostSubject: Fallacies Aka How BYD knows when you are using a bad argument   Mon Jun 22, 2009 2:57 pm

Fallacies skillfully avoid using there own arguments with these tactics
Fallacies of relevance

1. Appeal to emotion- The attempt to establish a claim not by providing good reasons for the claim but by appealing to the passion and prejudices of the audience. This does not prove anything.
So Styx says a long speech why abortion should be legal, then IB comes in and throws an aborted baby on the table and screams JUST LOOK AT THIS! LOOK! HOW CAN YOU LET THIS GO!

2. Appeal to authority- The attempt to establish a claim by appealing to an unqualified expert or irrelevant authority. So if you said "experts of forums like BYD would back me up when I say..."

3. Ad hominem argument- My absolute favourite, the easiest to spot by far. An argument that attacks the person making a claim instead of addressing the issue
Aeldy - Second hand smoke kills
Mustard- Your mother is a hamster and you are a jerk

4. Argument from ignorance- An argument that claims that because there is no evidence that it is false, it must be true.
Lina- Hey I did not at anytime take your ipod, and its not in my house, therefore you suck

5. Begging the question- An argument in which the premises used to prove a conclusion already have truth without mentioning anything else
"Soooooo Vacucous, how is the guy you stabbed doing?"

Falacies of Ambiguity These attack you because they are unclear

1. Equivocation- If a word changes its meaning in the course of an argument
Rocker 327- I want peace
Brute- I will give you a piece alright

2. Amphibity- An argument uses a grammtical construction because it can be understood in two ways. Watch I'll use the same sentence with different pauses
Axeforhire will you let me be yours? - Breakyoudown
Axeforehire, will you let me be?
Yours- Breakyoudown

3. Misplaced accent- An accent or grammar that is misleading and it stresses the wrong word
Come to Hate's store! Free guns! (Guns are not free ever, you will be shot if you don't buy anything)

4. Composition- Relating a thing to its whole
Shady is cool but this forum sucks

5. Division- The opposite
The forum is awesome but BYD is a total douchebag

Was that an appeal to authority?

Logical fallacies are life changing. Here is a good list of 20 of them...

http://www.theskepticsguide.org/resources/logicalfallacies.aspx

However it says this, "Valid logic applied to one or more false premises, however, leads to an invalid argument." Is that true? I thought if an argument uses valid logic then it is a valid argument, and that a *sound* argument was one that had both true premises and valid logic. In other words a valid argument may reach a false conclusion if there are one or more false premises but at least the *reasoning* is correct.

1. Whales are fishes. premise 1
2. Fishes are cars. premise 2
3. Therefore whales are cars. (1, 2) [transitive property]

Maybe you could let me know which is correct BYD.

Also I often see non-sequitur listed as a logical fallacy but to me it seems as if any logical fallacy is a non-sequitur. Like in an argument from authority the conclusion does not follow the premises, so a logical connection is implied where none exists. Is that true? If so I assume non-sequitur is just a sort of a "any other kind of bad logic that isn't listed here is also a logical fallacy" kind of thing.

"...

Brute- I will give you a piece alright"
-BYD

Damn you're brilliant with these things lol.

Your diagram confuses me
Things need to be true in order to follow that formula lol, I've seen it before

It has to be like I don't know

All paintings are red
All paintings are well done
Therefore, some red paintings are well done

I think anyway
This s*** gets confusing

I was just doing...

a = b
b = c
therefore a = c

Only making a = b and b = c total BS.

The whole (1, 2) thing means that I derive the conclusion from premises 1 and 2 and then note the logic I used to make the connection.

Yeah in philosophy we studied a formula that goes like
If P then Q
P
Then Q

or

If P then not Q
Not Q
Therefore P

Or
If P then not Q
P
Therefore not Q

I hate these seriously. How can we state the obvious in the most complicated way?

Oh yeah you can do it that way too. It's like a premise about a logical connection the way I understand it.

1. If you buy hats, then you are a man.
2. You buy hats,
3. Therefore you are a man (1, 2)

Then someone could say premise 1 is false and maybe use an example. *Displays record of a woman buying a hat*

Honestly I never really learned the forms I just kind of go with the flow and do what makes sense.

If a gorilla is in a tree then it is not a computer
A gorilla is in a tree
Therefore its not a computer

my friends like joking about this song
"This is why (3x) I'm hot (hot)

I'm hot cause I'm fly
You ain't cause u not"

basically it boils down to what byd said....

If P then Q
If not P, then not Q

such laaaaame lyrics

do you really want me to start explaining how 2=3 or will you start making sense? and don't forget that i'm studying physics, and a great man once said "physics is to mathematics what sex is to masturbation"
