PostSubject: Dreamtheaters New Album (Review)   Wed Jul 08, 2009 3:22 pm

Ok kiddies, i think this will be my first album review. But when a child is given fine paints, he can create a masterpiece, even if it is finger painting. If you understand my broken analogys, please keep reading

Ok, so the album up for review is this one, Black Clouds & Silver Linings

At first when i heard DT were putting out a new album, i simultaneously did two things. 1) Shat a brick 2) prayed to god that it wouldnt suck. I mean, these guys are never past there prime, but, the days of Train of Thought have long since passed. And no band can either stay in the Golden years, or have two golden years. Well, much to my surprise, DT have found a way. They have successfully made a follow up album to Systematic Chaos, which i might add, every time i listen to it, it grows on me. If anything, BCaSL is the best DT album to date since ToT.

That album starts off with probably the star track "A Nightmare to Remember". it is 16 minutes of high pitched passionate singing, petrucci playing glory. It is so amazing, words fail me. The next song, "wither" is definitely a slow ballad, but they rock this one out. i know, ballads never work, but maybe im describing it wrong. more of a sad tune. Sort of like an entire sing of the beginning of "Fatal Tragedy".
My next favorite song is without a question, "The Shattered Fortress". i like it so much, i have to provide a link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6DjMqOEq0I
listen to the whole thing, you wont regret it.

I really cant describe this album, if you are a dream theater fan, you will not be let down. this is not another Octavarium.
I HIGHLY, no .... it. I ORDER you, to listen to the whole album. If you are a dream theater fan, this is a must have, if you are a casual listener of the prog genre and like some DT once in awhile, definitely check this album out.

The best part of all is that it is a 3-disc set. 1st disc is the album, 6 songs, 75 minutes. The 2nd disc are all covers and special track of "To Tame a Land" the song that DT covered for Iron Maiden on the Kerrang album, 6 songs, 46 minutes. And the coup de gras, by far, is the 3rd disc. the third disc is the first disc, but remixed instrumentals. AS a fan of petruccia, beck, and loomis and pretty much all instrumental albums, i exploded with glee when i found this out

So, if you dont like Dreamtheater, im not going to try and convert you, but if you are, i urge you, i shout to the rafters that you seek this album out.

Personally I think this album would fall flat on it's face where it not for The Count of Tuscany.

Dream Theater are good when they've got a bit of heft behind the progressive wonderings, hence why Train of Thought is by far their best album. BC&SL is really lacking in weight in my opinion.

Still, it's not a total let down The afore mentioned Count of Tuscany has about a bajallion awesome lead lines.

I'd give it 6 out of 10.

ehh, i somewhat agree with the COunt of Tuscany argument. But come on, you didnt like Shattered Fortress?
And i would also like to agree that it will never be better than ToT, but you have to admit, this album is better than Systematic Chaos, and that album was very good, but a sequel to that is hard, and i think they pulled it off nicely

Actually I prefer Systematic Chaos. Best Dream Theater albums:

1. Train of Thought
2. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
3. Images and Words
4. Systematic Chaos
5. Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory

Are you kidding? Dude, if it's metal from the 80's/early 90's I love it. You're forgetting this is the kind of stuff I was into before newer metal.

Omg I'm falling in love with this. It's almost as good as the original, but I love the new twists they put on it. This is great

I wish Dream Theater actually had David McBee as their vocalist; if DT have a weak link, it's LaBrie.

That's really an awesome song. One of these days I'm going to have to give this band the time and attention it deserves because I already know I love their music.

Not liking Images and Words is unnatural: there's a reason it's their best selling album. It's just damn good.
