PostSubject: Metallica "Death Magnetic"   Sun Nov 16, 2008 4:13 pm

Ok so the new album has finally reached the local stores, The day that never comes is a HIT right now.
But the real oldschool metallica fans loved the change of the musical style?
i think i rather listen to old metallica but hey the new album is better than "Saint anger"
I gave it a 3/5
Ok heres the full review.

Death Magnetic is the ninth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released on September 12, 2008[1] by Warner Bros. Records. It is the band's first studio album to feature current bassist Robert Trujillo, as well as the first to be produced by Rick Rubin.[2] Death Magnetic is also the band's first studio album released through Warner Bros., although they still remain with Warner Music Group, which also owns Elektra Records, their previous label (internationally they remain on Vertigo Records). The album is the band's fifth consecutive studio album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States, making Metallica the first band ever to achieve five consecutive number one debuts.

All lyrics written by James Hetfield, all music composed by James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo.

3/5 is a pretty safe way to go, some very good hits. Others....not so much

All nighmate long, Unforgiven III and The Day That Never Comes prompted me to give a 4, most people will argue that it isnt one of their better albums but i'm rating it as an album not in comparison to their other albums.

i shall put this again in the rules sticky, but i think if you are reviewing something and you DIDN'T write it, it should be in a diff color

i am a metallica fan and have been for a long time. i turned away once they put out st anger. everyone said they have sold out, but i would like to argue. if we as aspiring artists form a band, and then call it quits, then reform for the love of the music, that doesn;t make us sell outs. metallica loved the music process. i don't blame them for returning to the studio. and for the great songs they turned out, they get my blessing, a die hard fan.

one complaint. i don't know if it was the quality in which i downloaded, but the sound quality is poor. i have 320kbps at 44kHz, and it still sounds very scratchy and tiny, not that full sound that they had for the black album.

death magnetic gets a 9.0/10

i don't call them sellouts. actually i don't have a problem. but i am pissed that they changed. you can almost hear the fatigue on the black album. but even that is not a problem. my problem with them is what they did to ...and justice for all album. it was good, but with lowering the bas (ok i admit i find burton a genius and i still think his death is a bigger tragedy than lady di and kennedy put together) just made it seem like they crashed and burned to the ground. for me it didn't have that sth special. and none of the albums that came later was any better in my eyes.

But it was very surprising how they had a few decent songs. I only expected one good song to be honest. The exceeded my expectations slightly

to styx:
i can understand how you are upset that they changed. nobody likes to lose the sound they fell in love with. however, one of the better analogy's i have heard was told to me in my HISTORY OF ROCK AND ROLL class (if anybody gets the opportunity, i suggest you take it). "music is like a big ship, to keep in on a straight course is very difficult. one small change in either direction is inevitable". we have to realize that music is changing. that heavy ship will list in way you may not necessarily want it to go.

shady:
that is very good that you are not factoring their past work into the album. on one hand i agree and on the other i disagree. while each band's work should be judged on its own, i think that we have to factor in past efforts to see growth as a whole

byd
exactly

You're right in saying that we have to factor past efforts to see growth, I couldn't agree more, all I'm saying is that in general you can't solely base an opinion of an album on the artist's past work, but you're right it should be taken in as a factor.

that is the balance i was trying to describe. spot on. it seems as though on this album particularly, they are getting a higher rating because their last album was not so good. i completely agree with you

Never thought of the St. Anger thing, but you're completely right, if they went Black Album > Death Magnetic i'd probably have given it a 3 but because of St. Anger I gave it a 4 and didn't even realise it lol, well pointed out.

"way i may not want to go"? wtf? hey if i didn't like change then i'd also hate maiden, slayer and most other bands that i've been listening too. but metallica did it the wrong way in my eyes. and ok leave it be, what's done is done. but now they are trying to be what they were, and yet remain what they are - it doesn't go that way. if you ask me they should spend a few nights in an abandoned building, and have a few crappy rehearsals just to remind them of the time when they first came to NY.

it's like your ex cheated on you with your friend. and now she wants to get back together, but also wants to keep him. hopefully this analogy will help

metallica has had three births
1) cliff burton days - these were their golden years. they peaked. i am surprised at the amount of people in this forum who claim to listen to metallica, yet don't listen to kill em all, or ride the lightening. this was metallica at their finest.

2) garage days and black album, and st anger - much more pop influenced. yet they still rocked. mainstream. steadily went downhill

3)now - after, what 20 years they continue to kick ass. and while they may not still be the band you remember, the band you love playing sold out crowds with a huge metal following, they continue to put out good music.you cant disagree with that

much better than most of the crap on the radio

you're right i can't. but i still prefer good ol' ride the lightning, kill 'em all or master of puppets to the all the loads, reloads, st. angers and death magnetics of the world

but everyone has their choice and their opinion. at least we agree that with cliff they were in the golden ages

Imo i think St Anger was just a piece of Mainstream Pop influence.
Death magnetic has a lot of the Metal "4th Generation" we are in the 3rd Generation and i think from now on Metal bands will try to get as closer as they can to Metallica...like they've been doing since the 80's.

well of course! that's the black album. i'd estimate that 75 to 80% of ppl who listen to them today have heard the black album first. ok most of those ppl think that st. anger is a masterpiece and that earlier albums are a piece of trash

Ozzy in Sabbath was true metal, with Randy he created some amazing music, but with Zakk he's good but I don't think it's the same.

Metallica was released on August 12, 1991 through Elektra Records, and is the band's best-selling album to date, with over 15 million copies sold in the United States and over 22 million copies worldwide[citation needed]. It's also one of the best-selling heavy metal albums of all time.
wikipedia

in my personal opinion, kill 'em all was the best. true fast speed metal. the quintessential metallica. they ****ing rocked on that album. master of puppets was good, but im afraid ride the lightenting was better. ...and justice was just decent. i never really got into it. blackened was a great song

Don't get me wrong Metallica still made great songs after Black album
Memory Remains
Unforgiven 2/3
Whiskey in the jar cover
I Disappear
Turn the page
Day that never comes
Just to name a few

bad things are they didn't make whiskey in the jar or turn the page. matter of fact, all the songs on garage days 1 & 2 were covers. they were awesome, but not metallica originals.

my argument is that metallica was the best BEFORE the black album and ...and justice
