Well my friend wanted to play this game with me and I didn't want to do it but I did it anyways. He sent it to me one file at a time over MSN. We started playing and like all RPG games I wasn't really that into it. At first I was like level 10 still and he was level 20. I started a new character at that point, a Summoner Necromancer. I've been playing it since and it is a ton of fun. I got really studied up on my stuff so my character is pretty much perfect. If I ever do make a mistake I can just use Hero Editor. I use Hero Editor to give myself nice equipment and money because I'm lame like that.

Well I'm level 39 right now and I'm in Nightmare mode and it is pretty damn fun. I didn't think I'd get even close to this high in level but it actually didn't take very long. My friend really wanted me to install Maple Story (God I hate that game) so I did it and we did a private server with 16x experience. Well we played a ton today and even with 16x experience it was boring as hell and we only got to level 30. I'm okay with it though I can do other things while he plays or whatever.

I have cautiously avoided online RPGs because of the crazy addiction to be better

I'm actually just playing single player and sometimes LAN with my friend. I could play online but I'm kind of scared to also lol.

Also the game seems much darker when there aren't other people...

Lol. If I was going to make an online character I would make a choice between PvP and PvM. I'd probably go with PvM just because PvP takes a larger chunk out of your life but I might take the middle route as well and go with a Zealadin or something. Summoner Necro is pretty damn fun for PvM but I hate it when my skeletons die to bosses.
