PostSubject: Best Metal Albums of ALL TIME   Sun Aug 30, 2009 11:14 pm

This is something I was pondering while I was driving home from my Dad's house. I noticed that a lot of times people overlook an album as a whole and just focus on songs. I've also noticed that an album can sometimes be one giant song, in a way, with each song being a piece to the puzzle. Once you've unlocked the entire puzzle you realize that the album is a masterwork because each song contributes equally. Compilation albums are restricted from this list.

So I was thinking, what are the best metal albums of all time? What albums go together so cohesively that they just blow you away from start to finish? What albums are mixed in such a way that you love each song because it fits in the overall picture? I know that to be on this list the album has to have originality, character, diversity, and the big one, consistency. This isn't an easy list to make at all, but I think I know what I would choose.

10.) Metallica - Kill 'Em All
This album just flows very well. And it's Kill 'Em All, I don't know anyone that would argue with this. This album is, in my opinion, the best Thrash Metal album ever made. The riffs are insane, it's incredibly fast, it's aggressive, it's everything you want in a Thrash Metal album. James' voice is fantastic in this album, and it just mixes together so well. I can't think of one song on this album that is bad, in fact, all of them are spectacular in their own way.

9.) Steve Vai - Passion and Warfare
This is just a fantastic album for fans of guitars and instrumentals. You have incredibly heavy songs, like "Erotic Nightmares" and then you have slower, more melodic songs like "For the Love of God". This just has it all, and it shows how genius Steve Vai is at the guitar. It's just amazing, I can sit down and listen to this album and every track is simply fantastic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IrWyZ0KZuk

8.) Black Sabbath - Paranoid
This album has to be on here. If it wasn't for this band, Metal would not exist today as we know it. And I think this album is their crowning achievement. On this album you have 4 of the most well known songs ever, and the rest are simply fantastic in their own way. It shows how metal got it's start, with the bluesy metallic playing of Tony Iommi and the screeching vocals of Ozzy Osbourne. This is just an album that will always be remembered.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wo135x0oXo8

7.) Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper
A lot of people aren't fans of Children of Bodom. But, I think this album is simply spectacular. Every song on this album is gold. The only song that might lag behind is the W.A.S.P cover "Hellion", and that is just a bonus track. Alexi Laiho is just a genius at the guitar, Janne Wirman is amazing, and of course the songwriting is just superb in this album. Also, Laiho and Wirman are perfectly in sync, it just mixes so well. Whether you call it Melodic Death Metal or Power Metal, this isn't an album you can ignore.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8F3t-F_grc

6.) Wintersun - Wintersun
Jari is a god. Not only did he play the majority of the instruments on this album but he also produced it personally. It is mixed so well, it's just a masterwork. You have a perfect mix of slower and faster parts, and of course a prefect mix of melody and brutality. "Winter Madness" is fast and heavy, and right after you have "Sleeping Stars" which starts out slow, and has beautiful melodies. If you are a Folk Metal fan at all, this album should make your jaw drop the first, second, and third time you hear it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4NDS0VUooc

5.) Sonata Arctica - Ecliptica
This album is the debut of Power Metal band Sonata Arctica, and is their crowning achievement. The sheer variety this album brings to the table is amazing. You have slower, more melodic songs like "My Land" and faster songs like "UnOpened". Then you have beautiful ballads like "Fullmoon". This album is THE BEST by Sonata Arctica, and will never be beaten. This needs to be at the top of the list for any Power Metal fan.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEkeAvFeuLw

4.) Norther - Mirror of Madness
I know we don't have many Norther fans here, but I challenge each of you who is a Melodic Death Metal fan to sit down and listen to this album, in it's entirety. It just blows me away. I can't pick out a high point because there are no low points. Each song is perfectly crafted, and it's just stunning. The diversity this album brings is astonishing. There is beautiful piano parts, and there are blistering guitar solos. This album is just perfect, I would not change a single thing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dbjcFYr9Oo

3.) Equilibrium - Sagas
What can I say? I'm in love with this album. It is so, so heavy and so so melodic at the same time. It has beautiful instrumental parts, and blisteringly brutal parts. It's very hard to pinpoint the exact reasons why I love this album, but I guess the easiest thing to say is that it's perfect. It has a sound that is simply unique. The death growls sound amazing when accented by the traditional folk instrumentals.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yom8nNqmxvQ

2.) Ensiferum - Ensiferum
There can never be a better Folk Metal album. this is just fantastic. The only thing I can say about this album is that it's perfect. Anything else I say won't do it justice because every part is in place perfectly. Anyone who says Ensiferum doesn't know what real Folk music is has obviously never heard the beauty of "Eternal Wait", or the amazing sound of "Treacherous Gods". How you can mix Folk and Metal so well is beyond me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgaXWDB68qI

1.) Nightwish - Oceanborn
Most of you will protest this, and I understand. But I honestly think this is the coolest metal album ever produced. Every song is just perfect. You seriously go from one song, which has extreme classical roots, to a song that is Folk Metal. It's the diversity that wins me over. "Moondance" is an amazing Folk instrumental, and right after you go to "The Riddler", which is a synth powered behemoth of a song. Then, you have "Sacrament of Wilderness", which mixes Folk and Classical into this beautifully crafted song. Then, you have Nightquest, which disproves any statement that Nightwish is not heavy. This album is perfect.

This is tough I'll have to read all of this and check some of it out. I think Iron Maiden's album Powerslave is amazing myself. Maybe I'll listen to that Ensiferum album tonight.

I might make a list too but if I do it's just going to be a personal favorites thing, which isn't really what this is all about.

+ rep for this tread methinks: I always say when I do a list like this, that it would be completely different if I were to post it the next day. So much of what I like depends on my mood and there are only say 3 albums that are gauranteed to make it eveyrtime. So saying, here's my top 10 metal albums of all time:

1. Death - The Sound of Perseverance.
Mere adjectives fail to atest to the all consuming brilliance of this album. Chuck's voice has never been so raw, his high notes shredding out his throat like a possessed demon, the guitars are so crisp, the riffs immaculately formed, Christy is precise and diverse on the skins, everything blends into perfect harmony. The album that started my obsession with death metal, and a love affair with extreme metal that has lasted almost 10 years. Just listen to the intro to Bite the Pain below, its note perfect awesomeness:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4Ypa4iC_4E

2. Negură Bunget - OM.
Proof positive that black metal can be intelligent, ingrossing, airy, with excellent muscianship and bold ideas, while still maintaining its core harshness. Using folk influences from their native Romania, and taking nature as a backbone for their work, NB create a form of black metal no one else is peddling, an epic, sprawling work of vast imagination that pulls you into its own little world. Magnificent:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46GhUrtrklM

3. Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor.
I think god was channeling himself through Loomis when he wrote this, because the downtuned riffarama is something spectular to behold. Weighty and just carrying that perfect edge of progressiveness to ballance the thrash bite, this album was a surprise, as its simply far superior to anything they'd done before. Warrel also wields his voice like a weapon, cutting with scathing force or crooning so softly, he sounds epic. I just hope the new album can match it. The ending sweeps on this song are legendary:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8JAsxUbjW0

4. Kalisia - Cybion.
I think enough has been said about this recently, so I wont bore you with my ramblings, heres a cover though:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaOPXEr6JVk

5. Iced Earth - Burnt Offerings.
Melding thrash with power metal, into a dark, theatrical epic, Schaffer's trademark gallop has never been so heavy, Barlow so fierce, the whole thing thundering along into the closing epic, Dante's Inferno which is a force unto itself. My favourite power metal album, and overlooked in my opinion:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LrGSIYAn9c

6. Symbyosis - On the Wings of Phoenix.
Frank and Nikos just seem to think differently from other guitarists, the riffs are so well formed, but no one sounds like then. The added sense of melody and te willingness to fuse big pop chorus and try other ideas only make this band more exciting. The fact that fans paid for them to self release this album, which came lovingly packaged with a bonus disc of new material and exceptional cover via pre-orders shows the kind re-action they instill in people: those who know them love them:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkLcD59gDNg&feature=related

7. Taake - Doedskvad.
I like the fact that though Taake remain close to standard black metal, Hoest can craft it into epic, riffcentric goodness. There's something in the way the riifs are wrote that put me in the mind of early Abigor, no one really does anything similar, and the fact that he makes it so darn cathcy and has one of the finest voices in black metal make this hard to resist:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQo4xF1nNCM

8. Mithras - Forever Advancing... Legions.
While its obvious Mithras are death metal, their structures and sound make them something of a unique entity. They seem to be able to take and old school riff and meld it with some otherwordly atmosphere and back it up with intense, sensational drumming. To say there are only 2 people in the band makes this all the moreof an acheivement. Stunning:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceJw71CX_Ns

9. Weakling - Dead as Dreams.
Epic, atmospheric, inspiring... full of mejestic riffs, with just that hint of harmony and melody with the piercing, mournful screeching make a great contrast. Not for people who don't like black metal for sure, but for those who can appreciate it, you'll find a level of muscianship that borders on genius, with actual solos, with a bit of shred and great compositions. Its a shame they only did this one album:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mmf1n59XlE

10. I really want to put Augury in this spot, I'm enjoying them so much right now, but as the albums only just been released, I'll refrain, but I'm not sure... there are so many bands worthy of a space. I think I'll go with 'Tallica's best effort ...And a Justice for All. Thrash had never been this forward thinking or dark and theatrical. Stunning from start to finish:

Very enjoyable reads
Lets see what I can do here

#1 Metallica- Ride the lightning
Seriously, every song is just beastly. Escape is the only song that isn't 5 stars in my opinion. Nonstop thrill ride

#2 Iron Maiden- The Number of the beast
Its pretty much a greatest hits cd. Hallowed be thy name is ridiculous

#3 In Flames - Clayman
I love this album. Every time I listen to it- its fresh. Perfect mix of everything

#4 System of a down- Mezmerize
It made me a metalhead. I love every single track as weird as they may be

#5 Ensiferum-Ensiferum
Best folk metal cd ever

#6 Wintersun- Wintersun

Powerslave was a close one too. I dunno, I think it was kinda like Dies Irae said. It all depends on my mood really.

But I think all of these albums are fantastic, even if they were to be excluded if I do it again. I'm going to edit this to put links in mine for Brute and anyone else who's interested

i cant make it through 1 album. i loathe the man. i will submit that he is an excellent lyricist, but i think he is a safety artist. people jsut say they like it because all the "cool" people say that bob dylan is "cool".
same thing with the oscars. some of the crappiest movies are nominated for best picture. its because all the snobs think that it is different and interesting.

f***ing holleywood

I like Bob Dylan because it's just the way music is supposed to be. Pure, unbounded emotion. His lyrics are what he wants them to be, and the music is just simple folk music. He isn't the best singer in the world, and he isn't the best instrumentalist in the world, but he loves what he does and it comes from his heart.

Musicians like that force me to love them. Besides that, I think it sounds cool

Anyway, to the albums thing. When I get a new album because I heard a song (i.e From Afar), I MUST listen to the whole album 3 or 4 times. Why? Because a while back I would learn about a sweet song and then skip over the rest, but later I would find out that I was skipping over a gold mine. I want to know the album right away

So true man about the gold mine
I ignored most of In Flames stuff until it was eventually played enough on shuffle that I was like whoaaa I love this

I hate that! I really do, I don't want the feeling that I've been missing out for like 2 months. I've seriously had albums for a month or two and still hadn't full experienced each song

You listen to whatever you want. It's no big deal. My parents and family HATE the man, but I love him.

But yeah, I think a lot of hippie douchebags like him too

i consider it a personality flaw if someone dislikes bob dylan. like i could still be friends with them but not really good friends. like, they probably steal and cheat, too

#1 - Metallica - Ride the Lightning
#2 - Dio - Holy Diver (Possibly only album where I've loved every song on the album)
#3 - Black Sabbath - Paranoid
#4 - Metallica - ...And Justice For All
#5 - Iron Maiden - Number of the beast
#6 - Slayer - Reign in
#7 - Metallica - Master of Puppets
#8 - System of a Down - Mesmerize/Hypnotize
#9 - AC/DC - Back in Black (Maybe not metal, but it has to be here)
#10 - Megadeth - Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?

Don't really listen to albums, just stick it all on the mp3 player and play it shuffled, but that's my list.

Seriously

1. Fight Fire With Fire
2. Ride the Lightning
3. For Whom the Bell Tolls
4. Fade to Black
5. Trapped Under Ice
6. Escape
7. Creeping Death
8. Call of Ktulu, The

What's not to like? Every single song there is an instant classic and there isn't a song there you could disagree with being a top 10 metal song of all time, and all that condensed into one album, unbeatable (in my opinion) Smile

I don't know, Trapped Under Ice and Escape are pretty shoddy. AJfA and MoP are both better IMO, Dyers Eve is the epitome of thrash, its so rediculously good.

Hey, Death Magnetic was just iver the benchmark. Especially when you compare it to Load, Reload, and St. Feces

Dyer's Eve is still probably my favourite Metallica song ever, definitely for whom the bell tolls, ride the lightning, AFJA, Fade to Black etc all up there, but Dyer's Eve is a trash masterpiece.

3) Damnation - 2003
4) ghost Reveries - 2005 (my fav)

Had to do it.

I actually haven't even heard Bob Dylan really. I'll have to go see what all this is about.
