I've been trying to expand my musical horizon, except I just have one problem....
I have no bands to search.
I want to get into heavier stuff, just not sure where to start.

Help?
Names?
Songs?
Albums?

Okay, first of all I need to know what you listen to now. I mean, I would probably ending up showing you Melodic Death Metal and heavier Power Metal, but you were looking for Death Metal lol. So what are you into right now

Well at the moment, I only listen to a few. Cannibal Corpse, Lamb of God, Ensiferum, Ghoul, Amon Amarth, Pantera, Black Dahlia Murder, and not much else. I'm willing to try anything, so maybe maybe like one name from the major genres, or just ones you think are great.

For melodic death metal try Dark Tranquility and Kalmah just to see if you like them. Both are different from Amon Amarth and good at what they do.

Also try one more...

black metal: check out the link to the emperor album i just posted in the "mountains of might" thread

death metal: suffocation and morbid angel are good for newbs

power metal: rhapsody, helloween and blind guardian are good places to start

folk/viking: manegarm, Thyrfing and korpiklaani are all accessible

doom: st. vitus, esoteric and mourning beloveth

thrash: mantic ritual and kreator

just skip the melodic death metal genre altogether

Ok, well I'm going to give you a variety of options. Just listen to it all I guess and let me know what you like and I can supply you with more : )

I'm mostly into Melodic Death Metal, Folk Metal, and Power Metal. I don't delve into other extreme genres much. I'm getting into Black Metal, but I'm not the guy to ask about that.

Okay, well to start things off I'd say if you like Death Metal/Folk Metal to try Equilibrium. It's kinda like Ensiferum, but a lot heavier. I love this band though, I think there's a good chance you could get into them.

Equilibrium - Blut Im Auge
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yom8nNqmxvQ

Equilibrium - Nordheim
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aQ-icrJhhg

One of my favorite Melodic Death Metal bands is Norther. They can be really heavy, but also have some classical influences.

Norther - Mirror of Madness
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjEXb5hKRek

Norther - Blackhearted
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiX_z0ofp-4

At The Gates is one of the founding Melodic Death Metal bands. It's pretty much borderline Death Metal, I'd give these guys a try.

At The Gates - Blinded by Fear
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF0U77bm9mc

At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJme5uubkyQ

A newer Thrash band that I love is Skeletonwitch. It's super fast and utilizes Death Growling, so it sounds fantastic.

Skeletonwitch - Sacrifice for the Slaughtergod
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klweUM8wj4g

Skeletonwitch - Soul Thrashing Black Sorcery
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwjuLZjYGEw

Off of your list, I only really liked All Shall Perish, and Suffocation. Asphyx would be okay if it wasn't for the singer, and Marduk didn't really catch my attentionl

All right awesome.

If you want to start searching for heavier stuff you can just surf around here...

http://www.teufelstomb.com/

It's a review website and they review a lot of death metal, death/grind, grindcore, and brutal death metal. Don't be afraid to check out something they bash either.

If you're just looking for a new cool band you could try...
http://v2.metalreviews.com/
Their reviews aren't the greatest but would probably be perfect for someone just looking for new bands to listen to.

And of course...
http://metal-archives.com/
Not great for searching bands but a requirement for anything else. To be honest it could be used for searching bands as well though it's a little awkward.

Did I mention Teufel's Tomb is pure joy to read?

"Believe me, Iíve been dropped from more promotional lists than anyone else covering extreme music. Iíve actually been added, and dropped, by Metal Blade Records no less than four times in the past 13 years! I donít buy into the hype, I listen to the music and review it based on itís own merits and really donít care what the press release says or anyone else has to say about it. If itís good, itís good, if it sucks, it sucks. Period. Record labels really donít like that attitude, it hurts album sales. It probably doesnít help that I tend to question the band, the label, and their fansí, sexuality when an album is really terrible. In this instance, however, Job For A Cowboy arenít ďgayĒ, theyíre just really unimaginative and boring."
http://www.teufelstomb.com/reviews/jobforacowboy-ruination/

This is just one example out of hundreds.

Also, I find wikipedia to be a good way to find out about some music actually. I search bands I like and look at related bands, or genre listings.

It's really hit and miss, but sometimes you learn about some really good obscure stuff

Wikipedia is great for starting out with your basic exploration of a genre, which truth be told takes quite a bit of time. Also Last.fm can be used for looking for similar bands with some degree of success, and sometimes the members there will discuss other bands.

http://www.teufelstomb.com/
All brutal, death/grind, grind, death metal stuff pretty much so I don't know how much you would enjoy it. There are other things occasionally.

I use Pandora. I've learned about quite a lot of music from Pandora. But I mean, I'm not talking about new to metal or veteran. I've been into metal for years, and I just want to find EVERYTHING that I would like lol. Wikipedia has less Black Metal I think, but as far as Melodic Death Metal and Power Metal it pretty much has the majority of what you'd find anywhere else. Also it has pretty much every folk metal band out there I think lol

Yeah. Would have been less weird if they actualy spelled "Manila" right.

It kinda looks like "Vanilla Road."

That's what it reminds me of, and it just doesn't sound metal. I dunno, it just bothers me. The band is pretty good though, especially when you consider the time period

Spiral Castle is my favorite of the reunion albums, followed by Gates of Fire.

Mystification and Open the Gates are probably my favorite of their original albums. Invasion is good, also, because of Street Jammer and The Empire.

edit: Yeah, I've heard rumors of Shelton working on new material.

14 albums, each one of them quality (even though I haven't heard all of them, but MR never fails to deliver the goods).

Ok, here is my take on this thread for you.

i will try and suggest Scar Symmetry. hopefully i dont get shooed away....Razz.
but serisoulsy...they have darker style vocals while still using good guitar solos and riffs.

Scar Symmetry is fantastic! I don't understand why you thought we hated it.
