Here is a little project we can work on...make a list of the classic albums for various genres of metal music.

Here is a rough draft outline of the genres. The order is roughly chronological.

Heavy Metal
Doom Metal
Thrash Metal
Death Metal
Black Metal

So just post:
Band Name - Album Name (Year)
<Optional: Description>
<Optional: Opinion>
<Optional: Links>
---

This will only be for classics.

A simple example:
Under black metal,
Venom - Black Metal (1982)
[Note: Venom isn't black metal but it would be appropriate to put them under the black metal genre because they are classics of the genre...if that makes sense.]

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (1970)
Considered to be the very first Heavy Metal, or Metal album. This album, and this band, is considered to be the father of heavy metal, completely offering a new and heavy blues driven sound. The wailing, distorted tone of Tony Iommi's guitar makesvthis one of the most classic albums of all time.

I thought that album was 1970 and that the demo was 1969 July?

That album is totally classic doom, not general Heavy Metal. Heavy metal in general totally turned away from the sound after the 80's hit, while the Doom sub-genre totally embraced it.

I consider it the first doom band, but it's definitely in a genre of it's own. No other doom metal band sounds anything like them, so I can't group them in with Doom Metal really. I just call them Heavy Metal since they created the genre

What?! The whole instrumental sound of doom comes directly from Sabbath!

I think the idea is that Black Sabbath wasn't JUST a doom band, they were also a heavy metal band at the same time.

I disagree. Like I said, heavy metal went in a completely different direction after Sabbath. Look at Maiden, Priest etc, it went for a fast sound and a whole different image.

Yeah but how long after sabbath was it until another Doom Metal band came along? And they likely didn't sound much like sabbath. I agree they were the first doom band, but they were the very first metal band and they were considered heavy metal at the time. Doom Metal wasn't even around

I don't think heavy metal has to be fast to be heavy metal. It doesn't have to scream of steel either. I think heavy metal includes pretty much all of the early metal sounds.

This list is beginning to become awesome. Thanks everyone, and holy hell nice Skaven. +rep that's a big list. The whole purpose of this was that once the list is looking pretty complete people can go through all the albums they haven't heard and just see exactly what they were all about. And I'll refine everything into one post at the end with a proper "Thanks" list and all that. Mayyybe even downloads. ...I said maybe!

This has nothing to do with this thread but as I stated in my list regarding Lacuna Coil's downfall from Gothic Metal's oh so promising next big thing to the tedious "sellout" mainstream pop rock garbage they now peddle...here are 2 vids / songs...one old / good and one new / bad.

A Current Obsession from the album Unleashed Memories

Awesome thanks guys.

This isn't required but it would be helpful that if you say a classic for a band that has more than one classic, go ahead and say all of them. Try to be reserved with handing out the classics but things like Death and Venom likely have more than one classic (I would think 2).
