PostSubject: Axe's Black Metal favorites   Mon Nov 30, 2009 11:09 pm

Just thought I'd post some of my favorite black metal albums with short overviews/reviews. I know, I'm a n00b and I probably don't like trve kvlt h@rdc0re super Black Metal or whatever, but I hope some of you will enjoy some of these selections. There is only one at first but I am updating this a little at a time tonight.

Behemoth - Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic)
As most of you know, Behemoth started out as a Black Metal band. This is their first full length album, and is one of my favorites. They really knew how to put an atmosphere together back in the day. The first song, Chant of the Eastern Lands, is the first noteworthy song on the album. Nergal's shrieks are so.. eerie sounding, and really make the song sound evil. I really like how the song has accoustic guitar layered on top of the tremolo picked electric guitar. This song is just pure raw black metal, I can't see anyone having a problem with it. The next song on the album is an instrumental, with just an acoustic guitar. As you all probably know, I'm a fan of the ambient and instrumental songs, especially on black metal albums. They just mix so well in with the atmosphere. This song is less than a minute long, but it's not something I would overlook. It's just an eastern sounding folk style instrumental, I love it. Ancient, another instrumental song, is the next track that I would point out as being noteworthy. It's a fairly simple synth instrumental, but very beautiful. The chord progressions make it sound a little... medieval, sort of folk-ish. But very beautiful. Now the next track, and I think it's the last track I'm going to highlight, is "Hell Dwells in Ice". I think this track makes the album, at least for me. It's a round six minutes long, and has such beautiful but simple melodies. I get lost in this song whenever it comes on. To me it tells a story of great sadness. Nergal's vocals in this are just quiet, monotone chants. They add to the atmosphere perfectly, this is definitely the overall highlight of the album.

"Ancient" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lc75-VAXWu0

"Hell Dwells in Ice" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhPCEcVfXWk

ColdWorld - Melancholie^2

I know I've raved about this artist and album for awhile now, and I will continue to do so until something more atmospheric, dark, beautiful, and emotional comes along. I don't see that happening anytime in the near future. I know it's very cliche, but this album goes perfectly with a story of someone walking through a frozen forest. It's such an atmospheric masterpiece. The album opens up with "Dream of a Dead Sun", and it's eerie slow ringing. It soon goes into a quicker part, with rapid double bass, and it just sounds from there like a blizzard is raging, and not letting up. The very next track, "Tortured by Solitude", is probably my highlight of the album. It immediately starts out with this beautiful, yet lonely sounding violin. From then on throughout the album, it is a journey. Like "Hell Dwells in Ice" off of "Sventevith", I cannot listen to this song without being transported to a different time and place, and feeling for the brief period of time sadness and loneliness. But it's a good feeling. It's like you are understanding the sadness and isolation, not experiencing it. "Escape" is the final track on the album, and it is one of the saddest tracks I have ever heard. The song is beautiful and ambient, and it is a proper ending to the album. It's difficult to explain the emotion this song brings, so you'll have to judge it for yourself. This is the album that got me into Black Metal.

Don't like older Behemoth too much :/

Their death metal style is much, much better IMO.

I'm actually digging the behemoth track not bad at all. I've honestly never bothered to check out their bm stuff. The lyrics are good as usual with Nergal as well which is nice.

I listened to them for like two hours last night. I definitely believe I will be getting some of their material in the near future.

I've never gotten into Summoning they're just a little too fantasy driven for my tastes and if I'm being honest a little cheesey in my opinion, but I do like the track "Land of the Dead".

For those looking to get into Summoning! (blackstar)

Here is samples/links from each album (oh how much their style has changed):

Demo

Interesting. Not the greatest thing ever, but worth a listen or two.

Tales From the Northern Forest (song)

Lugburz

It's good melodic black metal, Tolkien style.

Beyond Bloodred Horizons (song)
Flight of the Nazgul (song)

Minas Morgul

This is where their style really started to change, after they kicked out the real drummer.

The Passing of the Grey Company (song)
Lugburz (song)

Dol Guldur

A bit more epic, with longer songs. The Nightshade Forests EP was release shortly after continuing the album, because Summoning had so much material written that they couldn't fit it all in one album.

Nightshade Forests (song)
Over Old Hills (song)

Stronghold

Summoning's only non-Tolkien album. With this album they moved into an incredibly epic style.

Like some snow - White Marble Eyes (song)
A Distant Flame Before the Sun (song)

Let Mortal Heros Sing Your Fame

This is the album that broke boundaries in the music world. Stronghold was epic, but this is even more epic. Some people have even gone as far as to call this album "too epic." Impossible IMO. They used a choir for the first time in the song "Farewell."

Farewell (song)
South Away (song)

Oath Bound

Ok. This totally hit me by surprise. It's even more epic than the last album. By far my favorite Summoning release, and most people just can't handle so much epic at one time.

2 songs here use the choir, and it sounds so good that I wish it was used more. But, alas, this album isn't just the best Summoning album, but the best metal album period.

Mirdautas Vras is also the only song, not including the LotR soundtrack, to be written entirely in black speech. It's actually very beautiful, yet ugly.

Mirdautas Vras (song)

And here is a "sampler" with all the songs on the album in parts (but to get the whole effect, listen to the album in order, and then it will take you to The Land of the Dead, widely considered the greatest Summoning song).
