The 90s were terrible.

The metal "Dark Age" was in the late 90s.

Eh, I would probably say the 60's or the 80's. For only metal, I would probably say this decade because there is a shit ton of fantastic metal right now. But overall, the 60's had amazing revolutionary bands, and the 80's just had a ton of good rock, metal, pop, everything.

I really don't think you can pick a specific era because all times have had something good come out of them that helped to develop the next in some way or another and all had bad.

I'd say 90's for music in general. But for metal specifically, 70's or current.

Both are wrong

Plus Nu Metal =/= Metal

If I dug through my library I could probably find a whole bunch of great albums released in the late 90s and even more in the early to mid 90s

I can agree with the death metal, but the best black metal is definitely of this decade: Drudkh, DSO, Taake, WitTR, Glorior Belli, Averse Sefira (to name but a small fraction)... all bands relasing excellent material that decimates the old school 2nd wave bands.

Thrash was definitely of the 80's. That's not even up for debate.

I said right now but thats cause i was high on the new slayer album .. I think there was great music made in the last 40 years .. Now the 80 had the bands that killed metal like motley crue , but they had slayer , metallica , megadeth .. and the 90s were the same .. but now we have kick ass music , im a fan of music and bands so i have to say the last 30 years to cover my ass ...

There's only a few really good BM bands that are from this decade (Taake released their bats album in 99), and those that are good don't even really sound all too much like BM anymore (DSO, Shining, etc).

As for Thrash: Rust In Peace, Epidemic of Violence, Final Holocaust, Coma of Souls, By Inheritance, Evoke, etc

90's still has my vote for the Industrial Metal scene, and shit tons of Doom. Plus Gothenburg Death.

I really don't know what Taxer is blabbing on about, thrash in the 90's f***ing sucked, outside of like, Suicidal Tendencies. There was some good Black Metal, but not as good as current.

Demolition Hammer and a couple of others released good albums in the 90s, but nowhere near the amount that were released in the 80s.

The 80s just seem a bit better because over time the shit bands got filtered out.

I was indecisive before, but I've changed my mind. I'm gonna back the 80's. To many great alternative rock/pop/alt punk albums to be ignored.

I mean what would I do without Let it Be, or The Smiths, or Closer, or Born in the U.S.A. or Entertainment... so many great albums, the list just goes on and on.

Metal-wise, it's definitely today in my opnion.

Even some of the retro-thrash bands are kicking the asses of the old-school ones.

I can't say as I've heard anyone else who sounds like Skeletonwitch. And you obviously know nothing about the new thrash bands: most of them like Evile, Gama Bomb and Mantic Ritual etc sound more like the big four. Or Exodus. Hell, one band even calls themselves Bonded by Blood and don't even try to hide it. Very few are as heavy as DH.

Skeletonwitch = Toxic Holocaust

But Black/Thrash doesn't count, was just referring to straight up Thrash. Plus, Evile and the like sound nothing like the big four. If anything they sound more like German Thrash or later era Thrash like Demolition Hammer, Morbid Saint, etc.

Agreed. I mean there are some similarities but not really same sounding at all. Skeletonwitch have a great deal more dm influence thats for sure. And a much greater emphasis on melody and an overall more "epic" sound. Compared to TH more rough sounds.

Clones? No. Similar? Yes. Very similar? Indeed. (And that's what I was arguing, that they sound pretty similar)

Plus, the thing that annoys me about the new wave of thrash bands is thatl they chose the wrong type of thrash to emulate. Most of the new thrash is stuff that mimics the "drink beer party party hail Satan" thrash, which is awesome when taken in its '80s context, but comes off as pretty shallow nowadays.

And where are all the new thrash bands that sound like the amazing tech-thrash that only gets underground attention? Where are the bands that remind us of Watchtower, Coroner, Toxik, Realm, Heathen, Anacrusis, and others? Exactly...

It's thrash, what are they gonna do? Is Municipal Waste gonna come out with a new album based on Lord of the Rings?

On second thought, that would be pretty badass.
