PostSubject: The Internet Is Altering Our Brains   Sat Jan 02, 2010 9:19 am

I came across this article today. The internet certainly keeps my verbal skills up and I was wondering if all of us on here are getting smarter just by being here. but wiser not

Quote :
UCLA Study: The Internet Is Altering Our Brains
Monday, October 19, 2009

Adults with little Internet experience show changes in their brain activity after just one week online, a new study finds.

The results suggest Internet training can stimulate neural activation patterns and could potentially enhance brain function and cognition in older adults.

As the brain ages, a number of structural and functional changes occur, including atrophy, or decay, reductions in cell activity and increases in complex things like deposits of amyloid plaques and tau tangles, which can impact cognitive function.

Research has shown that mental stimulation similar to the stimulation that occurs in individuals who frequently use the Internet may affect the efficiency of cognitive processing and alter the way the brain encodes new information.

"We found that for older people with minimal experience, performing Internet searches for even a relatively short period of time can change brain activity patterns and enhance function," Dr. Gary Small, study author and professor of psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, said in a statement.

The UCLA team worked with 24 neurologically normal volunteers between the ages of 55 and 78. Prior to the study, half the participants used the Internet daily, while the other half had very little experience. Age, educational level and gender were similar between the two groups.

The participants performed Web searches while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans, which recorded the subtle brain-circuitry changes experienced during this activity. This type of scan tracks brain activity by measuring the level of blood flow in the brain during cognitive tasks. While the study involves a small number of people and more research on this topic is needed, small study sizes are typical of fMRI-based research.

Sounds like there might be a lot more research done on this. I'm curious what would happen if they tried the same thing with video games.

I want to get my news from an unbiased source but there is no such thing. So I get it from FOX because they will actually challenge things, CNN won't challenge the white house at all

FOX is biased toward the right wing, CNN is biased toward the left wing.

Internet forums are the best news source.

CNN is totally not left wing slanted, not even close.

MSNBC is, to an extent, but definitely not CNN.

Why is everyone so laid back until it comes to news? It's like they watch the news, then anything that is funny (i.e FOX news) is all of a sudden a horrible thing? It's fucking hilarious! It's full of ultra conservative middle aged men who sit around and argue about things that are usually completely trivial. I for one find it funny, because you get the news and you get humor at the same time. See, I like Glenn Beck because he is constantly making outrageous jokes about something that might actually be true. I've read some out of his books and it's completely hilarious. There is this one part about gun control, and it shows and advertisement for Al Gore's form of defense, a stick. And it tells the reader to defend themselves like nature intended, and it warns them not to use it against anyone who is armed with anything. I for one find it hilarious.

FOX News is funny, but it's not "Ha Ha" funny like John Stewart or Colbert, FOX is "what the fuck is happening to the world? I feel sick to my stomach" funny...

Colbert is so good, he could legitimately be a news anchor. Jon Steward as a knack for laughing at his own jokes, whereas Colbert is serious most of the time and it is hilarious.

Anyway, that is the reason I like FOX. It's news, and it makes me laugh. Plus since I'm a conservative, I would rather have a conservative edge than a liberal edge. But I make my own decisions, just because I watch or listen to people on FOX doesn't mean I necessarily agree with everything they say. But I honestly don't watch the news much anymore anyway.

It almost always makes me smile, because it's middle aged conservative men talking about how the country - the world - is getting ruined. It's hilarious, because it's usually trivial matters (this is like deja vu). I can't help but laugh. And I still get some news because I know whats going on
