We obviously have different tastes on the forum, so which do you prefer? Clean vocalists or extreme vocalists?

For me I would have to say clean, but it's very close. Clean vocals take more talent from personal experience. I can growl pretty easily, but I cannot sing for shit. Also clean vocalists tend to stand out more, and extreme vocalists tend to sound more generic. It's easier to distinguish between clean vocalists than extreme vocalists as well.

I like both equally, and I would say good vocalists are equally as talented as well.

Oh and say harsh, not extreme tybfgnhjughjyfgjkhug

I tend to prefer extreme/harsh vocalists by a long shot. However often when I find a clean vocalist I really like I really fucking like em.

I'd have to say clean. Even though I'm a pretty harsh singer myself, but then I could never do stuff like Bruce Dickinson or Ronnie James Dio.

Oh god its so hard

Because clean and extreme vocals go along with instruments

Extreme = Much Less Guitar Solos

Clean= Usually less exiciting

Most of what I listen to is harsh vocals. Clean vocalists that I really can get into are few and far between.

=D
This is one of the hardest decisions
It really depends on my mood honestly
If I feel happy
Clean
Sad
Harsh

It honestly depends. Some music with clean vocals is amazing, but overall it seems harsh vocals are the "safe" way to go. At worst you'll be generic, but hopefully you'll reach decency. Clean vocals are really good when they fit with the music.

Clean.

Now harsh/extreme is what I listen to most, and some people, such as Åkerfeldt, have got it down to an art form (not a bad clean voice either). But a truly gifted clean vocalist, with a decent range and some power in their lungs just destroys for me.

Jorn Lande, Tom S. Englund, Anneke van Giersbergen... they just have something. Then you have guys like Attila Dorn who not only have a great voice, but work some wicked hooks into their vocal melodies, so you remember them more than anything else, even the riffs:

Of course you have aggressive clean, and my favourite vocalist falls into this category: Jens Carlsson. He harmoniously shouts and rages, he sounds pissed but the melody and power are still there, he's amazing:

got to have both. i want cake and i want to eat it to.

Akerfeld is a genious, i would have to say he has unlocked the secret to harsh and clean vocals. the dudes talking voice is mesmerizing for chissakes.

although im really a fan of christian alvestam. his clean vocals are really good as well.
