I want one to back up all my work, keep a truckload of movies, and back up my music
How much are they, and is it worth it?

That is helpful
Extremely scary that one of them died after a month though
Hopefully that was a rare case
When do external harddrives just die? The hell?

i accidently (my fault) fried an external after a good year of use
i take blame for that
yet my new replacement, died exactly 2 weeks after i purchased it. factory defect that is supposedly kinda scarily common

luckily, the data off of the 2nd one was retrivable via SATA cable and an opened up computer

i HIGHLY RECCOMEND you get 2 500gb or 640gb drives and just double backup. hell i have a respectable music collection and i have close to 200gb of pictures and redundant movies and im almost full on one 500

seriously, take a page from a squirlls book, they dont bury all the nuts in one hole, they have several locations
redundancy my dear friend

External last longer than internals because they dont have spinning platters which are the number 1 reason for internal hard drives crashing

This is a hard drive:

See those discs? They spin and are pretty close and if they hit eachother if you move or drop your PC while its on it will crash it. brute if hes using it for backup he really doesnt have a reason to carry it around all the time, making it safer

What the more technically minded people usually tell me is to get one of those open hard drives and get an external casing for it as it appears to be cheaper and you'll probably get a better HDD, I didn't do it because the thought of messing with metal scares me Razz

both harddrive have spinning disks.
but im far less likely to drop my laptop or desktop.

just as an argument ender...byd, get solid state. i cant really explain it, but think of solid state as like flash memory. hold LOTS of gigabytes....but there are no moving parts to break

they are uber expensive. 300gb could run you well over 200$

It could die, but it would last way longer than any other hard drive and its resistent to falls, etc but its not worth it for backing up files

I wouldn't buy any thing made by SEAGATE. I've been through 2-3 of those already, internal and external. They suck. I think Western Digital is pretty much top of the line, I've owned many of their products with no problem. I think the newer Toshiba drives got pretty good reviews as well.

Finally got it
Jesus, it was in a read only file, I had to call tech support to get it to a useable state. Mac's automatically put this kind of drive as read only as default. Jesus

Here in Finland internal 1GB SATA II hard drive costs around 70e, and external 1tb usb drive costs around 90e.
I'm planning to make my old computer into a file server for my home wlan-network and plug that old 1tb external drive to the server, so that everybody with the password can access those files on the server Smile
