PostSubject: VR's recommendation thread   Sat Feb 20, 2010 2:10 am

I decided to start a recommendation thread.

Recco1---
Trist - Hin
-----------

This is the recommendation of a single song. A single 60 minute (exactly 60 minutes) song. Trist is a dark ambient band with small black metal and metal influences. This song, Hin, would be most easily compared to Darkspace. The only difference is while I haven't checked out Darkspace that much they haven't really grabbed my attention yet. This song has grabbed my attention. After hearing it I had to hear it several more times.

Something about this song is so freeing. It's like it is submersing you into space and connecting you with all the points of space around you. It is the opposite of the claustrophobic atmosphere. The background radiates with space ambiance which I'd describe as the sound of something humming/hovering...like the white noise of space. This is the kind of thing that you would gladly invite into your bedroom to play while you fall to sleep. Meanwhile some noises enter and move around. After several minutes total silence comes and a man starts talking. He talks a little about space/darkness and the universe. I think most people will be able to appreciate what he has to say even if they aren't completely naturalistic. Quite impressively I didn't find it to be corny and I found the kind of poetic words to enhance the atmosphere.

The metal influences come in through the drums and later on the guitar melody. A more subtle powerful melody however emerges in the background at one point. It's an absolute hyper blast of space-frost melodious mystical heaven going through you. There is also some vocals in it that fit absolutely perfectly. They are deep, dark, and beautiful. It's simply amazing how free and wonderful this song is. A lot of its success definitely has to be in the sound production and the sounds themselves. I hear Darkspace is great even though I haven't given them much listen...but after hearing this I feel like I'll be too spoiled to ever get into Darkspace. The most amazing thing about this song is that nothing feels unnecessary at all. Every aspect of the music contributes to its goal. There is also an incentive to keep listening because it gets better and two dialogue interludes serve the experience well.

I recommend downloading it if you have at least a moderate interest in atmospheric music. I don't think you'll regret it.

Recco2------------------------------------
Necrophobic - Nocturnal Silence (1993)
---------------------------------------------

This is one of those death metal albums I really recommend checking out. My main problem with death metal is that there is just so much of it out there, and most of it is doing about the same thing, and I really rarely care to listen to more than a few of the death metal bands that I happen to know well and enjoy. Well Necrophobic is just an incredibly superb death metal band and this album is going down below Death's /Leprosy/ on my list.

Now this album starts off a little standard and boring...but you can see right off the bat that it's solid death metal stuff. Make sure you crank it up loud because this album becomes better the louder it is. Now once you get to the second song it gets really good and there are lots of good songs and moments on the album.

The sound production and vocals are excellent. At times it sounds like the band is playing the music of hell fronted by an incredibly powerful demon with a voice so deep and powerful it makes mortal men become weak at the knees. And that is about the imagery this band sparks up...a mighty demon guarding a gate to the underworld, or massive gargoyles roaming the land. The music is relentless and the riffs have everything going for them...catchy, very heavy, but most of all they don't wear out or sound too generic. There is plenty of variance in every song so you won't get bored.

...but really there isn't much I can say about the music that is going to make you want to check this out. It just sounds like another death metal album...and in a way it is that. However it is such a strong and solid album that that itself becomes its unique characteristic.

Moderate fans of death metal that has balls have to check this out. Anyone interested in giving some good death metal a try is invited.

Oh my God they are basking in the wraith of their own hatred and fury. Is that a...a clock? A huge clock? Are they sitting around a huge table? What are they discussing? What unholiness do they plan? Save me blackstar.

You haven't gotten to the melody part yet. It adds the magic to what you're hearing now. First though you get to hear a different melody kind of thing which is all right.

It might not be your thing but I'd give the sample song a full listen on high volume and if it doesn't seem interesting pass it up.

Recco3----------------------------
Mindless Sinner - Master of Evil
------------------------------------

Time for a short taste of some heavy metal.

16 minutes...

Full album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-aYRKR2-r0&feature=PlayList&p=3E5E13A29B97788E&index=0&playnext=1

That's 4 songs.

Recco4-------------
Demon - Blow-Out (1992)
---------------------

N.W.O.B.H.M. band.

Sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iw-rCfELRvA

It's doubtful many people care about this album but I gave it a try after hearing the above song (which is excellent) and it was a pretty enjoyable album. It starts off pretty boring but it gets better. It has some good songs. I recommend checking this out if you're a big fan of N.W.O.B.H.M. and need to hear more things out there or like the above song a lot.

http://rockpedrabonita.blogspot.com/2009/08/demon-blow-out-1992.html

The download I got was missing track #11 so I still don't know what it's like. I imagine it is pretty good though so I might re-download to hear it. The above is a different download that will hopefully be better.

I really like this album...
