PostSubject: Skeletonwitch, Black Tusk, Howl, Cremains, Hitone Cafe 2-27-10 Live Review   Mon Mar 01, 2010 1:57 am

Skeletonwitch, Black Tusk, Howl, Cremains

Hi Tone Café, Memphis Tennessee

2-27-20010

I arrived about an hour early for the show and slipped into

the small but cozy little bar that I would be seeing Skeletonwitch for the

second time in exactly 4 months to the day. The Hi Tone’s show room, bar, and

eating area all fit into one good sized room and provide a great place to see a

band up close and personal. I ended up actually running into someone from the

Metal Archives who recognized my Circle of Destruction patch and we chatted

until the show began. As the lights dimmed two robed women took to the area in front

of the stage and proceeded to walk in a circle as ambient music played. None of

us were really sure what to expect until the music abruptly changed and the women

removed their cloaks revealing scanty vegas style out fits and proceeded to

belly dance to death metal. Not gonna lie definitely not a bad way to start a

show.

Cremains

I took a spot back near the sound booth to watch Memphis

local’s Cremains who took the stage and quickly lead into a nice set of death

metal. They certainly didn’t garner a great deal of reaction from the audience

though their own fans seemed to be present. I was most impressed by their

general attitude and ferocity with which they attacked their instruments.

Bassist Clay Qualls was perhaps the most impressive of the group however, as I can’t’

say I’ve really ever seen anyone use slap style playing in death metal. All in

all a pretty excellent opening act that added a bit of diversity to the night.

Howl

Having been a fan of Howl for some months I was rather

excited to see how the band faired live and to hear some of the new material

for their upcoming full length. So I decided to move to the other side of the

room and grab a spot side stage to prepare for what I was hoping would be the

coming onslaught. I have to say I was not only not disappointed but I was blown

away. The sheer heaviness and power was enough to make me bang my head from the

first note to the last. In fact I would like to say they looked amazing but I

really only recall seeing the ceiling and floor but they sounded incredible.

The new songs they played fit in excellently with the three familiar songs from

the EP and I’m expecting quite a lot from the new CD.

Black Tusk

After the beating I took from Howl and being unfamiliar with

Black Tusk I decided to retreat to the side and watch, in retrospect I quite rather

regret giving up my stage side position. The sludge trio tore onto the stage

with a ferocity that can’t be put into works. Bouncing, smiling, and screaming

they worked the crowd into frenzy with moshing, surfing, and diving from almost

the first note. It was quite the site to see. Even my tired neck was inspired

to more banging. Despite an almost constant barrage of problems from bass amps

not working to microphones being thrown around the jolly trio continued to

smile and destroy our eardrums. By far one of the most impressive sets I have

ever seen I thoroughly encourage anyone who has the chance to see them to do
so.

Skeletonwitch

It was past midnight when the mighty Skeletonwitch finally

took the stage. Amidst cheers, chants, and nearly instant moshing the band

began the final onslaught for the night. If I thought they were amazing when I

last saw them at Rocktown that was just a warm up, the Athens boys were in

prime form and ready to make the tired weary pit warriors buck up for one more round.

Splitting their set about even half and half from Beyond the Permafrost and

Breathing the Fire the song choices were “predictable” but none the less still

amazing to hear again. Old fans, new fans, and Skeletonwitch virgins alike

screamed, moshed, threw horns, and caused general chaos (one overzealous surfer

even grabbing the lone ceiling fan while in mid air) if we thought Cremains were

good, if we thought Howl had blown our minds, and if we thought Black Tusk had

beaten our bodies beyond submission we were absolutely wrong. Lyrics were

screamed female headbangers fought their way to the stage and fans even joined

the band onstage. This was a night to party. Finishing with constant closer and

crowd favorite “Within My Blood” as the band unplugged and prepared to leave

one fan leaped the stage to begin a chant, before long the entire hall filled

with cries of “Skeletonwitch, Skeletonwitch!” The band then repluged and

invited everyone to join them onstage as they tore into an honest encore of “Sacrifice

to the Slaughter God” to finish out the night. Afterwards the members stuck around

to shake hands and thanked everyone again for making this one hell of a night.

Probably going to end up seeing them on Evisceration Plague, even though that means sitting through Cannibal Corpse...

Nice review.

I thought it was more personal. This one, a lot more than your earlier ones, comes off more as "I was at the show having a good time" rather than "I sat in the back critiquing everything".

That's a good thing, at least I think it is...

Yeah that's what I was aiming for, and in truth I did lol. A lot of my other shows I've been more in the back or it's been a bigger show this one I was right up front and having a blast. And writing is one of those things that comes with practice so practice makes perfect I guess lol.
