Hmmmm I'd say the albums Ensiferum, Iron, Victory Songs, and From Afar are their best. Oh, and I can't forget the Dragonheads EP and the 1997-1999 Demo compilation. I'd get those, they are by far the band's best.

So you don't think this band sounds good at all? I love folk metal of all kinds - Bathory included. It's different experiences.

Not all folk has to be dark or solemn or depressive for it to be enjoyable. Different things for different moods.

I don't like "bouncy" folk music at all, unless it's Alestorm which is more power metal than folk anyways.

Annoying music is annoying.

Enisferum, to me, is a good mixture of legit folk metal and the cheesy folk metal that you're talking about. I might be too much of a fanboy at this point to admit any shortcomings whatsoever though.

Agreed, but one can synthesize anything. Many black metal bands synthesize instruments because of how difficult it is to implement the real thing in. Of course some folk metal bands do use real folk instruments, and they get tons of respect for it.

Completely understandable. I think one reason I like them so much is because they mix folk metal with a much more thrashy and melo death sounds. When compared to the likes of Bathory, Manegarm, etc they are much faster in tempo (usually) and seem much more energetic.

The Nordland albums are my favorite "viking" albums by far. Hammerheart is a close 3rd, though.

also, happy sounding music wears me out. it has its place, but boisterousness gets tiring

Bathory's early stuff was black metal, but the later stuff shows no trace of it.

^the viking stuff.

However, Bathory's "black metal" is very thrashy.

Yeah, that's why I never use the term viking metal ever (except for later Bathory because they were that awesome <_<)

I've always taken Viking metal to be a lyrical thing. It's like Running Wild play "Pirate metal" which is just sort of a joke. I don't think they get a separate genre just because their songs are about pirates.

welcome Senrae! This is Axe from last.fm. We have this goofy april fools day thing going where almost everyone has their name changed to something goofy. Since I like folk metal I got stuck with this name lol.

Make yourself at home, you can go ahead and post a new topic in the Random section and tell everyone about yourself.
