PostSubject: Music Club - Week 15 - Dark Side of the Earth (not moon)   Fri Apr 02, 2010 5:13 pm

So I've put together a list of stuff that creates in my mind an atmosphere of "meaning."

1. Triptykon- Eparistera Daimones (2010)

Tom G Warrior left Celtic Frost abruptly after the release of Monotheist, but quickly returned with his new band Triptykon. This is their debut, released just over a week ago.

Some say the album is too repetitive, too long, or too simple. This is utterly false however as those elements help the album achieve an atmosphere that no other album has ever created before or will again. Tom Warrior takes everything on Monotheist and multiplies it by hundreds, as well as adding a certain gothic (not the flowery, cheesy gothic, the good, serious one) feel to the music (My Pain is the biggest example). This is by far one of the most angry albums I've heard, and the music is just crushing!

Download

2. Hanker- Snakes and Ladders (2000)

Hanker have been a band since 1985, still going largely unnoticed in the underground metal scene. This album is power metal at it's finest. Ballsy, catchy metal anthems will make you fist pump throughout. However, the album has a "dark" sound to it, even if it is power metal. It is fist-pumping, yes, but it is also sad if you really pay attention to it. The album is not all serious, though, with the song Hail to You, which is dedicated to their fans.

Download

3. Leech/Thou- We Pass Like Night, From Land to Land (2008)

A split album from two USBM bands. Very unique, and the two bands offer much variety. Crushing, yet relaxing, this is music to fall asleep to. They can both be compared to Wolves in the Throne Room, but with a much darker feel. While the two bands on this split can be compared, they can also be contrasted. Thou is heavier, with downtuned riffs that, slowly, roll over you like a title wave. Leech, on the other hand, uses many acoustic and clean sections, with some of the most unique vocals I've ever heard.

The bands both describe the natural happenings of the world, and how naturally bad things happen and our emotional connection to them.

Download

Enjoy.

Wow this is a nice fucking list. I kinda don't want to DL Triptykon though because I'm waiting on my vinyl copy to hear it for the first time lol.

It's amazing doom metal with some cool fast parts. Really just awesomeness throughout the entire thing.

Triptykon is a hybrid of a bunch of metal genres, but mostly Doom, Black, and Gothic.

The Leech/Thou split cannot be found on youtube, nor can most Hanker.

Triptykon is a false and do not entry!

Hanker is meh and I'm giving the last album a listen as I type, though it seems more promising than the rest. Surprised I haven't heard it actually consdiering I'm a big Thou fan. I shall report back after a few listens.

Again, Triptykon is pretty hit or miss, but I love it. It's a grower for sure, though.

Let Hanker grow on you as well.

I understand, you're just not ready for such beardy, crushing doom. Not that the band have beards: they look like a metalcore band, but that's beside the point.

Didn't like it much. It kind of gave me the impression it was good but not my kind of thing.

I'll download Hanker and give it a listen later.
