30 songs I like
Not a top 30 list although a lot of these would make a list like that.

Alatyr - Hviedzy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kb_o8l7Uc_U
-Just beautiful, like blackstar said. Soul cleansing beauty. Yes I'm on a white knight streak lately.

Anaal Nathrakh - Submission Is For The Weak
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6_MMo4rKFY
-Favorite Anaal Nathrakh song, and it wasn't easy picking one. However I'm happy with this choice. It has everything you could want from Anaal Nathrakh. Sinister, catchy, apocalyptic, and of course...angry as a man inside a fire tornado screaming at bombs falling in the air.

Bal-Sagoth - Of Carnage and Gathering of the Wolves
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXPIezT_LpA
-Great song but I just love the end. I play it as loud as I can...symphonic heaven. Simple but great. A pretty personal favorite. And most importantly..."Father, I am annihilation incarnate!"

Borkanger - The Eye of Oden
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9gyNvp_EiY
-This song is an amazing song, but it's the chorus I especially picked it for. Such a powerful chorus...intense melodic fire.

Cynic - How Could I?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRbLaNqsxhM
-This is a great Cynic song but then when it gets to the end it is just a total trance. And I don't even know how to describe the trance...it's just amazing. It isn't dark or bright, angry or soft, or anything. It's completely absorbing and wonderful. The solo leading up to the trance part is amazing as well.

Cynic - King of Those Who Know
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSmAacEpt-Y
-This is my favorite song by Cynic. As I said I'm on a white knight streak...and this is a white knight love song. Really love this song.

Darkthrone - In His Lovely Kingdom
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VE0gshiR8LE
-Perhaps the opposite of the above...this song is a total demonizing of the soul. This song makes evil feel good. And face it...being on a white knight streak doesn't change that. Unfortunately.

Death - Left to Die
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWW5gRb8LnE
-So this song starts off like a cool death/thrash song should...but then when the scream hits the shit hits the fan and all hell breaks loose. The riff is simple but goddamn awesome, and after that you endure through a relentless onslaught of old school death/thrash metal. The lyrics are all about pain and death, and illustrate how unforgiving life is...as they should. And then there is a second scream as well which is even more insane than the first.

Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHdjE8Gczn8 pt.1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQzHpBaSs7s pt.2
-Yet another white knight song. It has a few parts that are very emotional. I really like this song.

Hizaki Grace Project - Ritual

Iron Maiden - Children of the Damned
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b91rSw4xuYY
-One of my favorite Iron Maiden songs of all times. This song gives me chills...and the solo/ending are unbelievable.

Iron Maiden - Dance of Death
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tvhda6ZgVc
-This song reminds me of seriously good times. Such a good song...and so absorbing. And wonderful. "Let me tell you a story to chill the bones...about a thing that I saw. One night wondering in the everglades. I had one drink, but no more. I was rambling enjoying the bright moonlight, gazing up at the stars...unaware of a presence so near to me, watching my every move. Feeling scared I fell to my knees, something rushed me from the trees. Took me to an unknown place, and that is where I fell from grace. And they summoned me over to join in with them, to the dance of the dead. Into the circle of fire I followed them, into the middle I was lead. As if time had stopped still, I was numb with fear but still I wanted to go. And the blades of the fire did no hurt upon me as I walked unto the coals. And I felt I was in a trance and my spirit was lifted from me. And if only someone had a chance to witness what happened to me. And I danced. And I pranced. And I sang with them. All had death in their eyes. Life was something...they were undead, all of them. They had ascended from hell!" And then the solo is one massive multi-orgasm with an orgasm atop the multi-orgasm waveletts.

Iron Maiden - Duelists, The
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkPKLl8pAG4
-Must hear 100 times before you die. One hundred fucking times. I have to stop everything I do when the middle part of this song comes up.

Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J51LPlP-s9o
-Pretty much the same as Dance of Death...this song is amazing. Best metal song ever by my vote.

Kältetod - Wiederhall der Leere
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQrwwKCQiBo
-I've described this song before and I don't feel like doing it again. If you like black metal just fucking listen to it. If you don't like black metal but want to see what could possibly be so liked then feed your curiosity. Was my favorite song of all time for a while...and it still might be that. Not sure.

King Diamond - From The Other Side
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_efgqGySCw
-A relatively simple King Diamond song...but the chorus is seriously so powerful I had to include it on this list. Listen to that perfectly placed note that is placed in the background right at the beginning of the chorus. And then the solo part is great as well.

King Diamond - Welcome Home
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XC3AdRnrMI8
-This is still my favorite song I've heard by King Diamond unless the above one is. If the amazingly catch and awesome riff mixed with the vocals and melody weren't enough, the part in the middle with the harmonic vocals is the stuff of pure soulgasm. King Diamond in devil trigger mode. And overall this song just contains a lot of awesomeness and variety...even at the very end it has a very cool melodic riff. Thoroughly enjoyable song.

Melancolia - Taste of You

Rush - Red Barchetta
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAvQSkK8Z8U
-This song is so good it's painful. I feel sick sometimes when I listen to this song. However it is a sickness worth enduring because this song is just too wonderful, happy, and free to not be heard. Furthermore it's one of the first songs I ever remember hearing.

Shining - Fields of Faceless
-Powerful negative song.

Summoning - Land of the Dead
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxbG_rFrjGE pt.1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08sMSE3mJq0 pt.2
-I really really really wish this song repeated the melody in the very beginning more. However it makes up for that with an amazing chorus/chant later on in the song. Just a beautiful song I love it.

Thorr's Hammer - Norge
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYWGiNLbmhs
-Play this song LOUD! Feel the vibrations of terrific hatred.

Trist - Hin
http://www.mediafire.com/?ymhnvwzmnfm
-Awesome dark ambient song. A lot of you have heard this...it's an hour long, but worth hearing if ambient is your cup of tea. I really liked the way BYD put it...this song is simply unstoppable.

Ulver - Capitel V : Bergtatt - Ind I Fjeldkamrene
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2Qrz1dH6jc
-A masterpiece finale to a masterpiece album. Starting at 2:09 this song becomes unreal. That riff...is just so amazing. And the whole song is extremely good. It ends wonderfully with a soft acoustic melody.

Ulver - Eos
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8c9maWYRNo
-This song has made me cry when I wasn't even listening to it. That's something to the degree of how tragic this song is. The first time you hear this you will probably be offended by how depressive it is. Luckily in the album it is the first song, and immediately following it are many more soothing songs. However the album ends off just as dark. I think the album cycles like that on purpose...and indeed the lyrics here suggest that. Try listening to this song for a week straight, non-stop. I wonder what would happen.

Ulver - Not Saved
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2L_3VP9is0
-If any song could compare to how tragic the above song is, this one would be it. It might even be more tragic than the above...hard to say. It's hard to explain what is so amazing about this song...but it is a true ambient masterpiece. It's a prime example of the need for the listener to participate in the music. Whatever you make of this song is up to you.

Ulver - Ulvsblakk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97XFWOqU7X
-Probaobly my favorite neofolk song of all time. I mean just listen to it. Very solemn, majestic, beautiful. The laugh nearer to the end is powerful.

Vargnatt - Nur ein Traum
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKHPZk1Oock
-Pure magic and beauty. For being "black metal" this song feels so unrelated to anything else ever made. Like it is is it's own entity of it's own time and place on another planet. It seems to have an adaption of a melody found in the game /Chrono Trigger/, and it adapts it well.

Xasthur - A Walk Beyond Utter Blackness (2002 Split)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-0X2xm4cQs
-A walk beyond utter blackness indeed. This song is powerful and the demo version of it is far more chlostorphobic compared to the later versions...as it should be. I honestly thought about it long and hard and decided this is definitely my favorite version of this song. The thing I love about this song is just how overwhelmingly dark it is. Darkest song I've ever heard probably. And good as well. The part in the middle where Malefic screams over the rushing darkness is unreal.

Xasthur - Walker of Dissonant Worlds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcEc8LX1FMg
-The most mournful song I have ever heard.

Also, the more I listen to Cynic, the less I like them. Traced in Air was a soft record compared to Focus, and the fucking vocoder on that album drives me insane.

I'd much rather listen to Human: you get Paul and Sean without any of the annoying bits.

Cynic's demos are pretty cool, decent death/thrash type thing.

Keegan, I think you're the only person I know who likes Vargnatt. I'm in love with that demo, I can't wait until they finally release an album

I'm kind of amazed people liked this. And wow @ Brute and Eos. You can give /Shadows of the Sun/ a try if you want. It's a top 5 or top 1 album for me, or something like that. Recommended while you're sleeping or something just so you can really absorb it all. It isn't all like Eos but if you listen with an open mind and pay attention to the subtleties, and focus on the noises and imagery, it's very good.

Axe I love Vargnatt's /Nur ein Traum/ but I haven't been able to find it anywhere for sale. I've been able to find quite a few things for sale that were rare but not that demo. If they a full-length is released I'd go after it fast, although it's hard to imagine /Nur ein Traum/ being topped.

Red Barchetta is a great song and I wouldn't say it is the best on the album, just my personal pick. The whole album is amazing. Rush is amazing.

Iron Maiden is amazing.

A lot of things are amazing.

i actually like stuff like that. what i cant wrap my mind and ears around is the (seemingly) typical blast beats, way prominent cymbal usage, and shrieking. i love deep booming vocals. but mayhem-esque shrieks just kill me

noise can be good. Devin Townsend released a noise-like album, The Hummer. its just beeps and chirps and buzzing and waves for like an hour. i kinda dig it. if Shadows of the Sun DOESNT have shrieking or blast beats, chances are i might like it

ill get to it. thanks
