They are both melodic death metal.

This is folk:

Heidevolk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWmGwkNmpLs

Doomsword
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewkz0bl5nVA

Tyr
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5zNK--DUDg

Now, sure these three bands aren't only "folk" metal, hardly any are, but they have much more folk in them than Ensiferum or Wintersun do.

How is Ensiferum not folk? Wintersun definitely isn't, but I don't get how ensiferum aren't.

For one, I have the archives on my side
www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=332

But also, their use of folk progressions and melodies, as well as their use of folk instruments, make them a folk metal band. Of course during the live show the instruments are synthesized, but in the recordings it's live.

Not every folk metal band can perform live with all of the folk instruments. I really don't see how they're much different than the other bands that MC posted, other than the fact that they're more popular. And the fact that there are different elements in the music, such as Tyr's clean vocals and progressive metal sensibility.

i also dont beleive you need actual folk instrument to be a folk band. Its a style so as long as the music is stylistically folk (the feel and the melodies) i consider it folk. also, as much as i would love to have a hurdy gurdy player guest on something of mine, im pretty freakin sure there aint none nowhere around me and also pretty sure most people dont even know what that is. practicality comes into play. if you have the music and the vibe and the sound and your tight (and sounds good- goes without saying), it shouldnt matter how you got there

That's what I say, it's all about composition. It doesn't HAVE to use legit folk instruments, that just helps a lot

Yeah, and like Palpi (I think) said before, how many extra band members would they need to recreate all the hundreds of different sounds a keyboard can make?

Pagans Mind is (was) great.

Most "epic" band is Summoning, though.

Master Cthulhu wrote:
Gah, my favorite band.

Cthulhu Hulu's Guide to Summoning

Here is samples/links from each album (oh how much their style has changed):

Demo

Interesting. Not the greatest thing ever, but worth a listen or two.

Tales From the Northern Forest (song)

Lugburz

It's good melodic black metal, Tolkien style.

Beyond Bloodred Horizons (song)
Flight of the Nazgul (song)

Minas Morgul

This is where their style really started to change, after they kicked out the real drummer.

The Passing of the Grey Company (song)
Lugburz (song)

Dol Guldur

A bit more epic, with longer songs. The Nightshade Forests EP was release shortly after continuing the album, because Summoning had so much material written that they couldn't fit it all in one album.

Nightshade Forests (song)
Over Old Hills (song)

Stronghold

Summoning's only non-Tolkien album. With this album they moved into an incredibly epic style.

Like some snow - White Marble Eyes (song)
A Distant Flame Before the Sun (song)

Let Mortal Heros Sing Your Fame

This is the album that broke boundaries in the music world. Stronghold was epic, but this is even more epic. Some people have even gone as far as to call this album "too epic." Impossible IMO. They used a choir for the first time in the song "Farewell."

Farewell (song)
South Away (song)

Oath Bound

Ok. This totally hit me by surprise. It's even more epic than the last album. By far my favorite Summoning release, and most people just can't handle so much epic at one time.

2 songs here use the choir, and it sounds so good that I wish it was used more. But, alas, this album isn't just the best Summoning album, but the best metal album period.

Mirdautas Vras is also the only song, not including the LotR soundtrack, to be written entirely in black speech. It's actually very beautiful, yet ugly.

Mirdautas Vras (song)

And here is a "sampler" with all the songs on the album in parts (but to get the whole effect, listen to the album in order, and then it will take you to The Land of the Dead, widely considered the greatest Summoning song).

Pagan's Mind doesn't really strike me as epic, but I suppose it is. Fantastic band though, they are the one band I have spread across the forum. Their most recent album isn't too great though. It's still good, but not nearly as good as their other works.

Get their Enigmatic: Calling album. That's some epic shit.

I know you don't like downloading music...but here's a link: megaupload.com 46CKIV82

Do whatever you need to do. I won't judge you. I'll turn away if it makes it easier.

to me and members of lor (or just me- idk- lol)- there is a difference between badass and epic. Badass is pretty self explanatory- any form of awesomeness and brilliance. Epic is more specific to us i think- it has to give us a certain feeling. if i dont get that particular feeling or somethign similar to it, but i still like it, its not epic but rather badass or awesome. something can be baddass and epic at the same time as well. i feel like im writing a textbook. lol

and for the record- i thought that pagans mind song was pretty epic Smile

yeah. basically. i have a hard time putting into words what i think most of the time. if i wrote a textbook it would probably be gibberish. but it would be entertaining- at least for me Smile

yeah thats the basic sensation. sometimes i want to fight an entire viking army on a mountain in middle earth with my right hand while simultaneously trying to defeat Balrog the demon from the mines of moria with my left all the while trying to learn how to juggle. o yeah- and i will also have the urge to run and scream alot while i attempt at ripping out the hearts of the vikings with my bare hands. so my answer is yeah.
