Admittedly, I didn't search very hard (or at all) to see if there is already a Meshuggah topic, so my bad if it exists.

Anyway, Meshuggah is probably my favorite metal band - barring bands in the epic metal genre, which is kind of separate in my mind. Their drummer, Thomas Haake, is absolutely unbelievable. One of my favorite drummers.
If you don't know about Meshuggah, they are one of the most complex, heavy bands I have heard. They play a lot of complex poly-rhythms that will really fuck with your head, but they still stay heavy. Extremely talented musicians and song writers.

Here are a few of my favorite songs by them:
Future Breed Machine
Soul Burn
The Mouth Licking What You've Bled

Not many people like them here, which is bull.

I really like how awkward they are.

Oh look, polyrhythms... boring.

Their technicality (which in comparison to ovther technical bands isn't really all that impressive) fails to negate the crappy core-ish guitar tone and shoddy song writing.

I'll pass.

And really, I like anything as long as it's good. I love Priest, Sabbath, Maiden, and a whole bunch of other bands but shit is always shit, no matter how popular or underground.

PostSubject: Re: Meshuggah   Tue May 04, 2010 6:06 pm

It's a metal band for drummers, obviously. I wouldn't expect non-musicians or guitarist to enjoy their music, as it focuses almost entirely on rhythms. They are probably one of the least melodic bands I listen to, but being a drummer allows me to appreciate and enjoy their music a little more.

As far as their technicality, no, they're definitely not the most complex band out there. Being a huge math rock fan, I can say that with confidence. However, it's the way they go about song writing that sets them apart. Unlike bands like Tera Melos or Planets who just play in odd time signatures and short phrases, Meshuggah almost exclusively works in polyrhythms. So their patterns end up having a unique sound, how instruments will fall in and out of syncopation.

So, no, I wouldn't expect many people to enjoy or understand their music, but to write them off as "shoddy" song writers or bad musicians would be naive.

Yeah... so lick my hairy balls.
