PostSubject: OSDM Week 1: Origins   Mon May 31, 2010 10:16 pm

All right boys and girls, been meaning to do this for a while but I've been far too lazy to do it. This week will primarily be proto-death metal and some of the first death metal stuff.

Mantas

I know you guys are familiar with Death already (hopefully), but do not discredit their early output under their Mantas moniker. Everything is pretty much a demo but it's all good. Their most known release is their Death by Metal demo which came out in 1984. This is often attributed to one of the origins to the term death metal.

Possessed

These guys are pretty much a direct evolution of the Bay Area Thrash scene. These guys are also credited for coining the term Death Metal with their 1984 demo Death Metal. Their most influential work is most likely their 1986 album Seven Churches.

Death Strike

Another early death metal band, these guys are the predecessor to Master. More awesome stuff. Their demo Fuckin' Death came out in 1985.

Warhammer

Don't know too much about these guys really. They're British though so that's cool. Most well known stuff is from the 1985 demo Abattoir of Death

Hellhammer

One band that I would like to say is proto death metal. They have a lot of the characteristics needed but they lack a certain something. Still a phenomenal band though. They didn't release too many things, but Triumph of Death, Satanic Rites, and Apocalyptic Raids I would say are their most important. First two came out in 1983 while AR came out in 1984.

Mantas ftw. Though, Legion of Doom was their best song.

That RIFF. Why was it not on Scream Bloody Gore!?

Mantas were badass no doubt. Possessed pretty awesome. Not familiar with the others though. And you should already know my opinions on Hellhammer by this point.

Some stuff I didn't get to add due to time restrictions

Sepultura

Believe it or not there was a time the Brazilian band Sepultura wasn't rubbish nu metal. Their thrash albums are awesome but they hold most relevance in this discussion with their split and first album which came out in 85 and 86 respectively. Most notably they're credited as being one of the first, if not the first band to use true blast beats in metal in their song Antichrist.

War

Necrophagia

These guys came out with their debute album Season of the Dead in 87. Came out pretty late compared to these other ones but it was nevertheless pretty influential, plus they've been releasing demos since 84 so eh.

Sarcofago

Another Brazilian band, and these guys are fucking insane. Like really. Not only were they pretty much a proto-death metal band, but they also highly influenced black metal and the "war metal" sound as well. INRI is their most well known work and in came out in 1987.

Slaughter

Don't know too much about these guys other than Chuck Schuldiner of Death was with them for a short time and that they kick some ass. Their debut album Strappado came out in 87

Autopsy

I really don't want to put these guys here but this is probably the only place I'll use them. They formed in 87 and their debut Severed Survival came out in 89. Shit's really awesome, and they were one of the first few death metal bands to incorporate a strong doomy sound in their music.
