PostSubject: OSDM Week 2: Tampa Bay Madness   Mon Jun 14, 2010 6:14 pm

Didn't make a topic last week due to finals but now since school is over expect one of these babies every week for a while.

Florida is a weird place for the first regional scene of death metal but whatever. You'll find all of the big name bands here and a cool thing is that there is a shared "sound" among these bands. This sound is so strong that you can clearly hear which later bands took influence from the Tampa scene. Usually there's a pretty thrashy and abrasive quality to these bands.

Death

If there's one band I know all of you guys know (or at least I hope you do) is Death. These guys started in 83 under the Mantas moniker but changed their name to Death in 84. Along with Possessed and other bands, Death is considered to be one of the earliest pioneers of death metal. Death later turned more progressive but I'm going to focus on their earlier releases for the focus of this topic. Their debut Scream Bloody Gore came out in 87 but I'd say their best work is their 1988 effort Leprosy.

Morbid Angel

GHOULS! ATTACK THE CHURCH! If I had to choose a favorite from this scene I'd have to go with Morbid Angel. These guys formed in 84 but I wanted to save them for this week. They have a pretty solid discography and 3 of those albums are 10/10 albums in my book, but I'm going to focus on their 1989 debut Altars of Madness. I seriously can't stress enough how much this album kicks ass. It completely encompasses what the Florida sound is like. Evil riffs, blazing guitar solos, fucking awesome lyrics, the whole shabang.

Obituary

Another big name band here. These guys formed in 88 and released their debut Slowly We Rot in 89 and Cause of Death in 1990. Don't know what else to say other than John Tardy has some of the most amazing vocals in all of death metal.

Deicide

These guys used to get a lot of press because of Glen Benton's antics (Bob Larson interviews, branding an inverted cross on his forehead, death threats, suicide claims, etc) but that doesn't mean they didn't make good music. They formed in 87 as Amon but changed their name in 89. Deicide released their s/t soon after in 1990 and Legion in 92

Cannibal Corpse

Probably the other band all of you guys now. These guys were originally from NY but they moved to Florida and gained that distinct sound. They formed in 1988 and released their debute album Eaten Back to Life in 1990. I mainly want to focus on that album but I'll give a nod towards the 92 album Tomb of the Mutilated, which contains some traces of the Flordia sound

Nocturnus

These guys are pretty cool, they formed in 1987 when Mike Browning left Morbid Angel. These guys are known for their sci-fi lyrics and heavy use of keyboard/effects. Their first album The Key came out 1990.

Malevolent Creation

Same deal as Cannibal Corpse. NY band that moved to Florida in the late 80s. A bit lesser known than other bands mentioned but their earlier efforts, such as their 1991 debut The Ten Commandments are pretty damn good.

I'm a huge fan of Death, obviously. To me they define the genre, at least with their early works. Leprosy is an AMAZING album, it's so good.

Morbid Angel is decent, but I haven't gotten into them nearly as much as I have other OSDM bands. I'm a pretty big fan of Nocturnus though, The Key is a completely awesome album. Very unique.

Oh, and I hate Cannibal Corpse. I find it very boring.

Not the biggest Cannibal Corpse fan either but the first album is decent and they have some cool songs on Tomb. Everything after that though is really boring though.

I think they were influential, but I cannot listen to their music. I'd much rather listen to Suffocation for that style of death metal. I think they're similar, but Suffocation is miles ahead.

Not even close in style but Suffocation is indeed leaps and bounds better

I know all of these. Haven't heard Nocturnus or Malevolent Creation much. Malevolent Creation for some reason never caught my interest but I haven't given them much of a chance. Nocturnus I heard about more recently and I think I heard them but I don't remember what they sound like really. I'll check them out next time I'm in a death metal mood. Deicide I'm not a huge fan of really. Just never stood out for me. Death is godly and Morbid Angel is awesome, and Obituary is pretty cool.

And Cannibal Corpse is just something else. And Suffocation is Suffocation.

Death is one of my favorites here, I also really enjoy Morbid Angel and Decide. I haven't heard much of the others I don't think, I don't really like Cannibal Corpse, but I will check out these other bands. Very Happy

All fucking great bands that really do have a sound that kinda binds them together, thank you for bringing them up for everyone who does not know who they are. They need to be educated.

And I have to agree with Morbid Angel being one of the best from that list.

Time for some more obscure acts

Atheist

One of my all-time favorite bands, though I didn't really want to put them here. They're mainly known for their jazz-fusion oriented sound but I think there's enough Flordia osdm in them to make the cut (at least the first album anyway). They were formed in 1988 and released their debut Piece of Time one year later.

Unholy War

Cynic

I know you guys are wtf'ing right now,. but trust me., Cynic used to play Flodida osdm at one point in their careers. That point was their demos and boy were they both influential and good. Cynic formed in 1987 and released their most influential demos in 1990 and 1991. The 1990 demo bit on the thrashy side but it's still awesome.

Cruel Gentility

Uroboric Forms

Brutality

First band here I'm pretty sure most of you don't recognize. These guys are totally sick, like the spanish flu kind of sick. Really brutal stuff too. Formed in 86 and came out with Screams of Anguish in 1993.

Killing Addiction

Another Flrodia gem, Killing Addiction was formed in 88 and the Omega Factor was released in 93. Don't know much else about the band other than they kick tons of ass.

Hellwitch

Another cool band that not too many people know. They formed in 84 and released their debut Syzygial Miscreancy in 1990

Not sure how I almost forgot about these guys, like seriously anything with James Murphy is awesome. Formed in 1992 and released Dreams of the Carrion Kind in 93.

Those are all really cool, but I think that Killing Addiction was my favorite. Solstice is really cool too, I think I might've heard a song of theirs a while ago.
