What scales are used in the composition of metal music? I'm thinking it would be the Prhygian Scale mostly, but not sure.

The pentatonic minor scale is a great one to start out with. Also the dorian and ionian, along with the phrygian like you said, are fun to work with. Also harmonic minor scales are great, if you are looking for non-modal scales.

Thank you Axe.

I've already started to piece together some riffs.

Personally, I like to stay away from scales. I use them to find a basis, but I like to alter the scale pattern to make it sound unique. Takes a lot of trial and error to find something that sounds good, but it's worth it.

Theory was the best class I took, and the worst class. I learned a lot of helpful hints for composition, but at the same time it took some of my creativity away. Plus I disagreed with our instructors, because they had that classical elitist attitude.

Just experiment and use scales as a base.

Ever record yourself?

And do you know any good finger stretches? I only know a few and I really need to increase my dexterity, especially in my pinky, because my ESP has much, much larger frets.

All the ones I find are pretty much the same three.

Fuck, I'm taking that class next year. :o

But I'll be sure not to tie myself to scales.

It can get difficult, if your course is anything like mine. It will start out insanely easy for the first five weeks or so, then get difficult. You will learn a lot of things that help immensely. I'm glad I took it, even though it was a bitch.

It should be somewhat easy at first, because I already not a fair amount of theory, but yeah, it'll get insanely difficult.

But, honestly, unless you're playing shitty prog, musical theory doesn't matter all that much.

im a firm believer that you just got to do what sounds good. metal typically has minor tonalities though. music doesnt have rules in the end

theory is good to know, but it will not write good music for you. all it helps with is understanding basic traditional stuff and analyzing stuff. its fun to know because then you know what rules your breaking and youll feel like a bamf.
