PostSubject: Pickups   Wed Jul 14, 2010 6:53 pm

Alright, I've had my ESP for quite awhile now, and I've done no work to it. It's time to put a new pickup, or tow if I can afford it, in my guitar, for the stock ones have horrible tone, and I'm not to fond of them.

The problem is, I have no idea where to start.

I know I want something that'll have a thick and heavy sound with distortion and down tuning along with decent clarity while soloing, but I also would like it to have a somewhat good tone when played clean.

So far, I have found a few, but still remain lost.

Few finds:

Dragonfire HCZ Active Humbucker 85A & 81C set
Seymour Duncan SH-8, SH-5 & TB-5, OR SH-6 & TB-6

I am a fan of the JB/'59 combo Seymour Duncans, because they sound good with metal and clean. Active pickups are alright, but only on distortion.

Why does everyone think EMGs are godly? So many people use them, but they're honestly not even the best pickup, and not even that greatly priced.

They are good pickups, but not the best for the price. They are great for metal.

Uhhh, no, a lot of people think they are, and opinion somehow becomes fact.

Popular opinion says so, which means they are favored for metal. I didn't say they were, apparently they are pretty close because of how many people use them. I really need to state things more clearly.

The JB/'59 combo is what I have on my Ibanez ;o

Thinking about getting some Blackouts on my BC Rich since it's a shitty guitar and will only be used for distortion and practice (that and looking cool)

Well, it's a shitty guitar so I'll get a shitty tone out of it with passives. Plus, it already has actives and I don't think passives will fit in the holes.

There's a lot of hate for EMGs but I think they sound rather good, if the style you are wanting to play is fit for them.

I thought they gave a cleaner tone through distortion. Isn't that their forte?
