PostSubject: VR rambling about atmosphere   Wed Jul 28, 2010 6:31 am

One day I was trying to define atmosphere, and after thinking about it I came to define three different kinds of atmosphere.

Atmosphere of experience, or
Atmospheric Experience - The complete character of subjective existence.
In other words it's the culmination of everything one experiences. Atmosphere doesn't have to stand out...and that's one of the important things about it. A dry and dull day carries with it an atmosphere. An exciting nervous day has an atmosphere. It includes feelings, thoughts, textures, health, all of it. I used the example of my mornings doing physics homework in the 12th grade. I would wake up with something like 6 hours of sleep. I would stay in bed for 10 or so minutes but eventually I would arouse myself out of bed from stress. I'd rush into the bathroom to wash out my dry eyes and then cold and tired make my way to my desk, cringe as the light turned on, open up my book and try to focus my eyes so I could see the numbers and problems I had to do. Then I'd reach over to my ipod and start playing Mayhem's /De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas/. I'd do the problems as quickly as I could and then eat breakfast and head off to school. This all carried with it an atmosphere. It's not one I can really put to words. The experience could perhaps be duplicated to a large extent, but it still wouldn't be the same. It wouldn't be me doing the physics problems on my own familiar wooden desk, with cramped in space and junk lying all over. Everything counts for atmosphere. It's the totality of the experience, the complete character of subjective existence.

Then there is projecting atmosphere, or
Atmospheric Projection - Atmospheric experiences due to imagination
While this is part of atmospheric experience in the strict sense, it is meaningful to distinguish it. One is projecting atmosphere when they empathize with atmospheric experiences. For example if I imagined what it would be like to be the character in some book I might project atmosphere. Simply by imagining this character's experiences the character of my subjective existence is changing. However the change is probably not as vivid as an axe blown to my face. In fact the more vivid my imagination probably the stronger the atmospheric projection will be. This could also be imagining an atmospheric agent. While I might have never experienced ice skating in the Olympics, I can imagine what it would be like to ice skate in the Olympics. I'm imagining an atmospheric experience. My favorite example of atmospheric projection is probably the feelings a person gets when they think back to nostalgic memories.

Lastly there are things that influence atmospheric experience, or
Atmospheric Agent - These are things that actually exist and affect one's atmospheric experiences or atmospheric projections. A forest at night is an atmospheric agent. Music is an atmospheric agent. And one can project atmospheric agents as well. Imagine a rainy day in New York. Perhaps you can make it more detailed, there is a traffic jam. People are laughing on the sidewalk at old men honking their horns. Go on as far as you want. My favorite example of atmospheric agents is probably atmospheric black metal. Not only does the music become part of your atmospheric experience, but it influences you to project atmosphere as well. Kaltetod makes me think of a tilted snowy plane covered in blizzards. It's location matters too...very far away, but in a very specific way. It's far away.. about 30 degrees left from where my nose points. It's tilted in a specific manner too. It wouldn't be the same otherwise. And of course that's just the rough image that goes with it. There are a whole slew of things that could be said about it. And of course atmospheric agents don't have the same effect on everyone. The effect can differ from person to person.

Lastly I want to just say the subtle details matter with atmosphere. If my desk disappeared suddenly there would be a very distinct feeling I would get from the massive gaping space in front of me. It's hard to put into words, but it would really change my world for a while. And an atmospheric shift can have a strong impact on someone or it can barely change their atmospheric experience. It all just depends.

There is more that could be said but this is enough for now.

I feel satisfied now.

This is all very interesting, I never knew there were different kinds of atmosphere. Would being uncomfortable around a family member or enemy be an atmospheric experience or would they be an atmospheric agent??

I just made it all up because I felt like it. I don't limit myself to the real world when I ponder. I like to play around with the world inside my head.

They would be an atmospheric agent affecting your atmospheric experience.

The reason I found it necessary to define atmosphere so loosely as to include mundane every life events and moments is because I recognize that the total character of my everyday existence, while normal and typical to me, varies drastically when compared to other people. If I was to suddenly be in Axe's shoes the mood...atmosphere, character of subjective existence would be very different. My everyday life has a different feel to it compared to Axe's everyday life. I'm not defining it as only something exotic to be found in fiction tales and elaborate architecture.
