cheers
Mourners is one of my favourite songs, but I've always preferred the more serious side of folk.

alot of those aren't folk metal really, but it's all cool shit. And I forgot about Morkheim. I listened to them maybe a year ago when I was getting into funeral doom. Great stuff.

They totally are folk metal, and so is later Bathory no matter how much you deny it.

Nah not really. I mean, some of them are. But some aren't. Calling Agalloch folk metal is a massive understatement. It has some folk elements, but it most certainly is not folk metal. I'd say the Morningside is the same way only with less folk elements. They just have acoustic guitars and such. That doesn't automatically make them folk. Vintersorg's early stuff was pretty cool vikingy folky black metal, but their later stuff is barely folk at all. Morkheim is not folk metal, they are doom metal with some folky influences. The second song you posted by them is not even metal. Empyrium is also mostly neo-folk.

The fuck?

Folk metal =/= fruity power metal.

Folk metal = metal with a PRIMARILY folk influence.

That's my opinion, anyways. Later Bathory is no doubt folk metal, and probably the best folk metal out there.

So I suppose a band that uses no traditional folk structure or any traditional folk instruments is more "folk" to you than a band that does? Even if that later band is something you would call fruity, even thought that is a retarded adjective that just nullifies your opinion?

I'd say later Bathory has some folk influence, but it's not strong enough to make it folk metal. Bathory is viking metal. It is a legitimate genre, however misused. Amon Amarth is not viking metal. Bathory is.

Also, I was just pointed out that most of those artists don't make folk metal at all. I explained above.

It's more along the lines of "I don't really give a shit," and I'll call a folk metal band folk metal if it gives me a folky feeling/atmosphere.

Folk music isn't about song structure, that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Fruity poppy power metal bands don't give me that kind of feeling.

Um I'm pretty sure it has a lot to do with song structure. I'm going to write a metal song with a blues sounding progression and put a fucking pan flute in it and it will be folk metal to you I suppose. Oh, and as long as I give it really shitty tone.

Remember everyone, if you can hear the riffs, it's not good.

Folk music doesn't even have a structure in and of itself for it differs from region to region. Plus there is no such thing as viking metal, for it's usually just attributed to blackened folk metal stuff like Windir and Vintersorg. Bathory, along-side these other bands are legitimately folk metal because they don't try to sound "folky" by using gimmick instruments.

Bands that give me a folky atmosphere are what I call Folk Metal.

This:

is a lot more "folk" than this:

I agree with you completely, more than you realize I suppose. They are different and that's why I think it's silly to call it the same thing. And I don't know why you guys love to use the word gimmicky so much, just because a band uses an instrument that's not commonly used in metal doesn't mean they are trying to be gimmicky. Maybe they are just trying to make unique music.

if thats the way everybody thought then music as we know it today wouldnt exist. dont be so narrow-minded. metal would SURELY not exist. electric guitars, harsh vocals and drum kits had to be at some point in their existence considered to be "gimmicky" by people with your mind set. Its awesome to see people incorporate new things into music. Who knows? they could eventually become a staple and then turn out to be not "gimmicky". if gimmicky is what you call it, then gimmicky is a good thing.

dont contradict yourself, you just said they are the bands that get all the attention, so if thats the case, i would expect it less likely for me to get bashed. i would be more worried about yourself. and i am used to it. your just sour for some reason Razz GET AT ME!!!!

Yes, because if something you like is popular it means you won't get bashed for it, that's why metalcore listeners are among the most respected in the metal community.

w/e. people get bashed for everything. your point is made, but its a stupid one. everyone will get bashed for everything, not just me, i guess is my point. but in any case. im used to it (being bashed for likeing things. just like anyone else would get bashed for liking anything as well. ) if that will end the conversation.. cuz its a stupid one. anyone can get bashed for anything, no need to specify it to the stuff i like. anyone could do that to the stuff you like as well. dumb conversation is dumb. Razz
