Big new thing for me is instrumental. Any kind basically, it just has to have one (maybe two) concrete factors
1) display musicianship. technically sound. feel has everything to do with music, but i want the music to be tight and technical in nature. this is hard to describe, not being a music major of sorts. Basically, heavily jazz influenced works 85% of the time

Bands i like in this area (no particular order)

Scale the Summit
Animals as Leaders
Cloudkicker
Keith Merrow
Amogh Symphony
Buckethead (like Acoustic Shards, Electric Tears, some Crime Slunk Scene)
The Ocean (the instrumental version of Heliocentric that i have is epic)
John Petrucci
Jeff Loomis
Andy McKee
Blotted Science
Liquid Tension Expirament
Canvas Solaris

all those have one thing in common: instrumental. vocals are accepted, but preferably not
im a fan of a genre called Mathcore...but not hte core part, just the math part. if anybody knows the style of "djent". prog, instrumental, death....

JUST ANYTHING.....so long as it "good" by my standards.

GO GO GO

Please, lets keep baseless comments to a minimum. I know thats asking alot, but seriously, help a dude out

DJ Shadow is legit.

I only have one that comes to mind, and that's Foreign Objects. They had two demos, which were later combined and their works are probably about 75% instrumental.

I wouldn't ever recommend anyone mathcore or "djent" because it's so bad.
