PostSubject: Opinions on 2010 for music...   Mon Oct 18, 2010 6:36 pm

Since the year is almost over, I wanted to start a discussion for opinions on this year in terms of metal and music in general. I'm hoping there are a few surprises left, but anyway!

THE GOOD

I personally think that as a whole, this has been quite a good year for music in a lot of ways. Obviously, I'm not gonna mention the whole issue with Peter Steele and Dio dying, and Nergal's leukemia.
But on top of quite a few very good albums coming out, there have been many, many concerts...obviously this isn't the same for everyone, but I could have potentially went to a concert 3 weeks out of the month if I could manage it pretty easily.

While I need to spend some more time with the albums I have...I'm working on something akin to a top 5 list...maybe once I have some more time, I'll expand it a bit.

1) Ihsahn - After

I thought AngL was fantastic, it was powerful to say the least. However, I strongly feel that After blew it out of the water in so many ways. The album has one of the most monolithically powerful ending songs I've heard as well. I've literally spent entire days listening to this album. I could potentially say I like Ihsahn's solo work just as much as Emperor, however that might be too harsh/insane for some people to comprehend...

2) Hail of Bullets - On Divine Winds

I cannot stop listening to this, nor do I want to. I had high hopes when I heard Operation Z on the myspace, however, things were just completely taken to another level. It is such a strong effort, which is quite the surprise since Of Frost and War was fantastic as well.

3) Vulture Industries - The Malefactor's Bloody Register

I am in utter shock on how amazing this is. It is so cool. The vocalist is one of my favorites by such a long shot...

4) Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

I liked Vertebrae...I LOVED Axioma Ethica Odini. They made a powerful album, that's for sure! I preordered it the day I found out about it...

5) Mar De Grises - Streams Inwards

I've been listening to Mar De Grises for two years or so now...they are a great death/doom band that puts a lot of feeling in their music

Honorable mentions go to Triptykon, Drudkh, Rotting Christ, Aeon, Immolation, Heaven Shall Burn, Nevermore, Alcest, Misery Index, Les Discrets, Soreption and TesseracT for writing AWESOME albums as well...and this may change by the end of the year I suppose...obviously I'm forgetting a LOT of bands that made legimately good albums...

THE "I SHOULD HAVE CRAPPED MYSELF IN AMAZEMENT...BUT DIDN'T"

Dark Tranquillity - We are the Void

I genuinely like this album, and the songs sound fantastic in a live setting! But I don't feel they stepped up their game much from Fiction...talking with Mikael Stanne showed me that they're all REALLY enthusiastic about things, so I am going to hope that their next output will be a bit better.

Soilwork - The Panic Broadcast

Maybe I just wasn't too into melodic stuff this year...I listened to this a few times, liked it, but cannot for the life of me remember anything other than not being a fan of the vocals...They sounded great live though.

Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here

Entertaining, but I can't get into it unfortunately...I think of those posted here, I would be most willing to listen to this one more though.

THE DISAPPOINTMENTS

Keep of Kalessin - Reptilian

The music has been deteriorating since their last album. I won't deny, Obsidian is an INCREDIBLE guitarist, but I was compelled to listen to them over and over again, and then this comes...I suppose this might change when I see them live...

Sigh - Scenes from Hell

To be honest, I may not have given this one much of a fair listen. I couldn't hear ANYTHING over the keyboards...

Negura Bunget - Maiestrit

I want to like this...I just can't really get into it...which is a shame, Om is still something I listen to every now and then.

Kamelot - Poetry for the Poisoned

I listened to one song...I could not get into it...I may not have given it a fair listen, but it feels extremely uninspired...

THE BAD

Delays delays delays...

For one thing, Wintersun is still treading water, I have lost interest in them, as bad as it is to go X amount of time without a word...it's worse to announce a release date for your album and then not follow through, Jari should have originally said "it'll be out when it is out".
Another is the fact that Ne Obliviscaris's album STILL doesn't have a release date (the album is finished I think, might be getting mixed) and the fact that Unexpect had label issues and is sitting on top of a completely mixed album, this isn't their fault, obviously...

tl;dr: This year was like any other, had good stuff and bad stuff.

Bit early for this. We've still got a few months to go.

Yes and no, I'm sure by now, people have formed a decent amount of their opinion on the year for music. I'm curious to hear other people's opinions.

I can't really say anything yet, give me until the end of the year to comprehend everything.

We normally get a "Top 5 albums of 20XX" or something anyway. And I can't think of anything I've been incredibly dissapointed with (in terms of music anyway, Dio dying and all that stuff was really shitty).

Arsis won't top their debut. That becomes more and more obvious with every release...

Quite disappointing really, band had so much potential.

This year has been good to me as far as music goes. Equilibrium, Minus the Bear, Ra Ra Riot, Ihsahn, Blind Guardian, Burzum, and Lantlos have all had awesome releases. Not to mention the upcoming Agalloch album, which will surely be an album of the year contender.

That's the only album I could seriously see changing things up for me, it's only one album though.

Interestingly...Ihsahn leaked on New Years!

I thought that was an interesting little fact >_>

I thought We Are The Nightmare was a pretty damn fly album, as long as the stuff before that. Their new shit is awful.
