I've recently acquired one. Anyone on here play at all? If I remember correctly, there was quite a bit of contempt for bass players.

I started to learn bass when I was little but something happened where I just stopped playing. I WANT to pick up an instrument though.

Reivas plays bass.

well, all guitarists can technically play bass... none of which should actually call themselves bass players though (there is respect to be had). our bassist is pretty good though but he doesnt go on here ever. lol

Thin Lizzy - Dancing in the Moonlight
David Bowie - China Girl
The Eagles - One of These Nights

Those songs are great fun to play on the bass

for what? just bass or everything? for just a guitar or bass you can probably just use audacity (free) or garageband and use lightsnake (REALLY CHEAP interface- tiz really basic but its fine for just recording w/e) or get a line6 interface guy. For everything or for more serious stuff (just a full band setup, drums and vox or w/e), youll need mikes, a mixer and an interface probably. audacity is free though. so i would start with that. or garageband. both have shitty latency but its correctable. a window to the sun guys seem to know there shit as well. try asking them.

I just direct line mine into my Mbox it doesn't work well for guitars but for bass it works fine especially if you want a clean tone. But I'm also a pro tools user so *shrug*

What's wrong with being a Pro Tools user? Complicated as all hell, sure, but from what I've heard it's remarkable for post-production.

Nothing, I love it. It's just generally a joke among Taxer and I lol. I think it's a great tool for production as well. And can honestly be used pretty well for everything except final mixing stages perhaps.

I don't know if he's told anybody here about his joke project, Necrotroll of the North. When A Window to the Sun wasn't even an idea in our heads, he would make stupid "music" with various instruments (guitar, drum programs, his voice). One of them was dedicated to Reivas and how obsessive he was at the time concerning perfecting some bass technique.

It became a little bit of a running joke and when he immortalized it in that song the rest became history. We seldom say it anymore, but it's a gentle reminder of days that passed.

Wow Taxer, I'm GENUINELY surprised you haven't said anything along the lines of "LOLBASS" yet...

Anyway, I started my musical "journey" on bass about 6 years ago (will be exactly six years in about a month! WOW!) Didn't get serious about technique and actually playing for another year, around the time I started wanting to do vocals and whatnot too. I view bass and guitar as completely different instruments and approach how to write music with them completely differently.

Since I spend most of my time on a guitar these days, my skills on bass have diminished a bit, however every time I pick it up I still have a blast...I'll be working on bass technique pretty heavily next year (an hour and a half a day I think...)

A lot of the same things apply to all instruments. In order to get decent, you need to work on technique along with a large variety of songs. Learning to tap with your entire hand, artificial harmonics, sweeping (yes you can sweep on a bass...) and play slap bass will help you improve considerably. However, the biggest thing is practicing to a metronome.

I am a bassist who will not use a pick when I play either, you get a better bass tone by using your fingers in my opinion, and there are a considerable amount of advantages. Honestly, if I want to replicate the sound of a pick, I basically just uhh..."flick" the strings.

I actually think one of the big flaws and reasons I fell as far out or practice as I did was because I wasn't playing much outside of metal, my technique was solid but...definitely keep that in mind.
