Are you lead or rhythm? I've had a guitar for a really long time, I always take 4 month breaks in between playing because I'd practice lead and get too frustrated. I don't have the patience or discipline to teach myself the riffs I want to learn. I have recently started playing rhythm songs. I'll type in I don't know...Freebird chords into google rather than freebird tabs. I find it more enjoyable now, searching for an acoustic guitar, some of the chords are incredibly crowded on my electric

Anyways....

What are you?

Mostly rhythm because I find playing riffs more enjoyable than bullshit scales. I do, however, enjoy playing random bullshit for leads <_<

I don't want this

Drop C? What are you playing, deathcore? You probably mean C standard. If so, just fuck the tuning and play in E standard or whatever it is you're tuned to. It'll sound the same, just in a different key.

Yeah I got in the habit of calling it drop C. Some of the riffs sound nearly the same, but when some songs sound incredibly bad in the wrong key. Good sticking to E rhythm, way more fun

I have a guitar tuned to C standard and one in standard.

I can do both. When I want to try and impress, I do leads, but during serious songwriting I do mostly rhythm.

All I do when I try to impress is do the same sweep and tap pattern

At this point, I'm a mix of both lead and rhythm, which is what I want, I don't like the mentality behind someone explicitly doing one over the other. I'm more of a rhythm guitarist in terms of skill and what I can do with riffing over solos, but I'm working on my leads like crazy, it is going to be my main focus musically next year.

I also practice at least 3 hours a day (Or I try to, next year, I'm gonna end up averaging at 6 hours of practice/day I think...) that's a major thing with guitar, but even moreso when you're trying to lock in leads imo.

As for tuning...BEADGbe...I use a 7 string, so standard E with a low B...it works just perfectly for what I usually play.

Reivas is as hard as fuck. Taps impress I agree, I can't sweep

im a guitarist who plays guitar. the right things for both areas are impressive, though since im a lead guitarist, i lean toward practicing that more often, unless i found something else really interesting, which is what im doing now. i blame d-lor

I really enjoy rhythm a lot more than lead playing, basically for the same reason Taxer stated. Plus I'm honestly not that good with my fingers when it comes to scales and stuff. I do like to mix the two though, because I usually play by myself so I like to have some lead work mixed in even though it's not too complex.

Also something interesting to consider...

I play a right handed guitar, but I'm technically more dexterous with my left hand (I can't say either hand is actually dominant, but I write with my left hand and I throw with my right). This helps a LOT when moving around the fretboard, and it's nice since I have a decent amount of dexterity in my right hand for complex picking patterns.

I'll definitely say, for the most part, it's a little easier to enjoy practicing rhythm than it is to practice lead, but it's also sorta up to the player to make it interesting, and not practice the same thing ad nausem.

I'm the same, Reivas. I'm left handed when I write but do nearly everythign else right handed including guitar. I've never had any problems with it though.

I've never really thought about it to be honest. When I learn a song, I try to learn both parts but I never exclusively stick to one. There are songs I only know rhythm for and songs I only know lead for.

C standard and Standard, though I find myself loving to do rhythm because I don't invest 3000 hours in learning scales...

I know a few scales, and can play them poorly, but I definitely prefer Rhythm to lead.

ambidextrous

And it's honestly helpful, but not for sports haha. I played sports for years and was horrible, you'd think it would help, but nope, the only thing I was good at was baseball, and only batting, haha...

And it'd rule if we were all guitarists/musicians.

Also, I honestly don't see how anyone can really NOT learn their scales...they're really not that hard...

I know all the scales, only I know them in my brain and can't do them on guitar yet Razz

I've been playing piano since I was a small child so that's how I know them.

Piano is one of the instruments I could seriously NEVER play...that and probably harp...and drums because I would be murdered if I were to get a drumset...
