In an attempt to stave off the HOT AS BALLS heat wave we've been having, I shaved mah face.

Now anywhere else with hair on my body is dripping with sweat. HALP

Yeah I chopped my hair off but have as of yet refused to shave mah face. My only advice is to get a woman, a good razor, and a nice shower and let her take care of the rest...was that advice or my weird ex girlfriends fantasy...hmmm either way.

Contrary to Tril, I have one more day then a day off. This will be my eighth straight eight hour day. Fuck. And it was cleverly split into two work weeks so I still technically had two days off each week

The Great Cold Distance is my personal favorite for reasons relevant to the time that it came out and the times that I was going through, but if you want their best you might want to go for Brave Murder Day (for their doom era) or Last Fair Deal Gone Down (for their pseudo-alternative mood rock era).

Don't bother with their new album. Aside from Forsaker, it's awful.

Idle Blood is amazing, I don't know what you're smoking. And Onward into Battle is another 5 star track.

My personal favorites are The Great Cold Distance and Night is the New Day, but you really can't go wrong with any of their albums. I like them all

I'm not smoking anything. Just incredibly disillusioned.

I ordered the vinyl and the CD and got a few signatures on some postcards from the band, thinking I was going to be in for the listen of my life. I had just heard Forsaker on their YouTube channel and believed they were charging in the same direction.

To my disappointment, Night is the New Day was TCGD + hype machine + Mikael Akerfeldt talking it up like a complete tool. People wouldn't have signed on so readily if it weren't for the Opeth fandom that pervades Katatonia post-BMD, and doubly so if Katatonia didn't become Facebook twats the way that they have during press release. I'm not exactly calling it awful music but it's a step down from the certain signature that TCGD/Last Fair Deal Gone Down represented and what Night ultimately abandoned in favor of synthesizer abuse. It's no wonder Norrman left and revived October Tide for a yearning for something he wasn't able to do with Katatonia since that album came out.

Don't even get me started on the horrible video for Day and Then the Shade. The whole album feels like leftovers from The Great Cold Distance. It isn't bad music by a stretch but it certainly leaves far too much to be desired provided their otherwise flawless back catalog.

I guess that's a valid response. I do think there were a few 5 star highlights though, even if it was basically more of the same. I can't get over the Idle Blood hype though, they never really did anything that sounded quite like that

Idle Blood is good for what it's worth, but just because it isn't in their repertoire doesn't mean it's necessarily good for the direction they were wanting to achieve. I understand it was to be a multifaceted amalgam of genres and ideas they cobbled together since TCGD, but I cannot for the life of me sit down and let the album play. Day and Then the Shade is not a bad song and I do quite enjoy Forsaker/Departer as they're thematic to one another, but... eh.

Don't mean to be a "my opinion is right" Nazi since that isn't what I'm saying at all, but it just doesn't live up to their previous works which are, to date and to the mass that have heard them, real achievements in the pantheon of doom metal or their own style of melancholic rock music. I think it's acceptable to say that Discouraged Ones beats it despite DO's staggeringly awful production.

This is the most intellectual discussion about a band I've ever had. Bravo. Also, I definitely agree when you say it's basically their last album, with few improvements or changes in ideas. Hopefully their next effort is a different sounding album, one thing I rather like about them is that they almost constantly evolve in some form or another. And that evolution is a natural evolution, not like they were sitting around one day and decided to change styles. It kinda just happened, or at least that's the vibe I get.

i once saw a guy wear a brokencyde t-shirt at someplace we played a battle at a couple hours away. Nothing to do in that situation except point and stare like its the devil. Once there we discovered that literally everybody was a scene kid or core kid... that place... so cold... [breaks down in hysterical crying]
