PostSubject: Lyrical content   Wed Mar 23, 2011 9:31 pm

Are there bands out there that you don't listen to (or listen to) because of lyrical content?

I know for me that nsbm has a really unappealing theme in its lyrics and images, etc, but there are some songs out there by bands that I don't think are awful on the ears aside from their lyrics? It's an offensive theme, but a lot of people would say that Satanic, christ-raping, anal throbbing black metal would be offensive too and and I luvs it

But is there any music out there at all thats lyrical themes are an absolute yes or absolute no?

I wont lie- I don't like to select Slayer songs because I just feel like a jerk hearing it with my Catholic roots lol

Not a fan of prideful lyrics if I happen to disagree with the message. I wouldn't even care if a band had lyrics that were like...
NSBM??
I do care if it's like...
NSBM!!!
though.

On the other hand I occasionally like lyrics. It all depends. I usually don't read the lyrics of a band unless I like the band though. Maybe an example of a band I like in large part due to lyrics/imagery is Dawn of Ashes. Their lyrics are super simple but it just goes good with the music.

its a pretty bid deal with me. messages i dont agree with i tend not to listen to. i listen to powerwolf because they actually arent satanists, they just sing about it alot. the bands idealogy has alot to do with it for me. NSBM- is a no for me. satanist stuff- no as well.

I am very open, but music that attacks other things is usually a no. Music is supposed to bring people together, not separate us. It's a fine line though, I think music is freedom and the artists should express what they feel. but if the lyrics are all like "fuck christians, fuck god, blah blah" then I probably wont listen to it

Don't care what they say as long as they play good music

I'm really open with content, I think if it's good music, like Taxer say, then I'd prolly listen to it. But if I knew more than 2 people irl who listen to sameish music as me then I'd prolly pay more attention to what I play, or share with them. I dunno. I never play my music around others D: No one likes same stuff, or barely anyone does around here...

Lyrics are pretty far down the list of criteria that I judge music by. If a song or artist has interesting/good lyrical content I can appreciate it, hell I would even say it makes some music more bearable (Cradle of Filth) but if they have tacky/extremist/boring lyrics I won’t mark an album down for it as long as the music itself is up to standard.

part of the music and experience is the lyrical content to me. how can i truly feel the music if i completely disagree with what they are saying? the 2 go together. its like having sex with a hot transvestite (if your straight). she(he) may be good looking, but i would never do her (him) because underneath it all, its actually a guy. its just doesn't work for me at least. im totally fine if you guys are into that sort of thing though.

It depends with me. I don't listen to anything romantic. If i can relate to the lyrics it's a big plus. I don't mind satanic music, although "hate christians" or "i serve satan" is pretty lame & overdone lyrics. The same with Christian metal, i won't listen to it if it's all bible verses with their lyrics. I'm big with lyrics that are open to interpretation. But overall the music is what counts. If it's good on the ears then i will most likely enjoy it. Most of the stuff i listen to is growls & no one probably could hear it without following the lyrics really closely.

I listen to lots of music. A lot of it is enhanced my the message and lyrics. My three favorite bands (The Doors, Minus the Bear and Agalloch) all have excellent lyrical content which is one of the biggest aspects of the experience.

I have no fucking clue what Minus The Bear are on about most of the time. Agalloch's lyrics are fantastic though. I think it's more to do with the wording rather than the subject matter though. In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion's lyrics are just beautiful to listen to. In that way, I care about lyrics. But the subject matter wouldn't matter to me. I could enjoy a beautifully written song about slippers.

Sometimes lyrics ruin songs though, like Arcturus's Radical Cut

Minus' lyrics are usually so straight forward, depending on what you listen to.

Maybe it's just me being retarded then.

I wouldn't go as far to say they can ruin a song though. Trivium have fucking awful lyrics but I still love them.

I don't like In Flames "A Sense Of Purpose" album because of the lyrics.

NS themed lyrics are a negative for me, won't stop me listening to it if it's good enough though. The music will have to be slightly better than what I'd normally listen to, in order to make up for it.
