PostSubject: Going To California   Fri Apr 15, 2011 2:51 am

I live in Ohio right now. I'm poor as fuck, my dad is too. I live in a trailor yadda yadda yadda no one cares. I own an old ass desktop PC, classical guitar, 1978 Peavey Classic VT Series 212 amp (trading for a 6 string banjo lol) and thats bout it. I live like 12 miles from a town with no rides, so no job, yay. I need yo gtfo soon. Everyone who is a musician is like into deathcore and shit i dont like so no opportunity's there. Then in January me and my girlfriend started talking and e-dating. She lives in California. At this point, we are pretty much deeply in love (inb4 too soon, stfu, we talk 8 hours a day) and she said she'd let me move in to help me get on my feet so we can live together. But heres the problem. She is trying to get out of debt atm, almost out though. and I'm broke and even bus tickets are expensive. So my idea is to hitch hike and TRY to busk along the way. Any one have any tips or advice or anything to help out? I plan on going to school to become a guitar tech while I am out there and gig too if I can find a decent band. Also, she plays classical guitar and is an AMAZING singer so we were gonna create a bluegrass band too.

hmmm... idk if hitchhiking is the way to go. people are pretty wary of hitchhikers. train maybe? sounding like a pretty big journey. i feel like this could end up being some awesome success story thing. idk man. trains are probably really expensive. but are buses really that bad? ive heard that some are pretty darn cheap. idk man, i wish i could help out more. maybe you could make some more contacts along the way (via internets- maybe there is some cite that organizes expeditions or something like this) and see if you make it there that way. hope this all works out for you man.

Hmm, you gave me an idea, I could contact a bunch of online friends like in a line to there and like stay with em for a night, and hitch hike a lil and i doubt there are too many hobo accessible trains anymore >_< I feel maybe this is my way to start paying dues. I AM a blues player after all. A bus ticket is like $150 now, I know it doesnt seem like much but I can hardly afford the $9 a month internet bill :/

Yeah I wouldn't hitchhike, I'd rather pay and know the ride is direct and safe lol

I mixed up Ohio with Oregon and thought to myself "well that isn't too bad" but then I remembered where Ohio is... sucks dude. You might be able to do odd jobs or sell shit you don't need for money. Hitch hiking would blow chunks, so try to leave that as your last resort. Maybe see if your friends are nice enough to lend you like $20 and after a while that will accumulate pretty well. Good luck.

Hitch hiking is only good when it comes to going a state or two over, not a country

I know how ridiculous of a journey it is >_< but I have no irl friends at all >_> yeah, pathetic, BUT, idk, I'm trying to find a little bit of work around here. I just need to be with her :/ I'd be willing to hitch hike cross country to be there. I wonder how hard it would be to stow away in some large cargo for a plane xD

Hitchhiking is dangerous when you're not thinking. Be careful who you ride with. I did it for a while, and went from Seattle to Boston in about a month (I was stopping and staying in between). I'm really good at reading people though. If you get a bad vibe off of someone just walk away. Get rides with couples/families whenever possible. Groups of people travelling together are good too. Avoid truck drivers at all costs. Just use your head and you'll be alright.

This is surprisingly well done: http://wikitravel.org/en/Tips_for_hitchhiking
All the tips are good too.

Funny, I was gonna try to go for truckers XD, I figured maybe someone with a guitar case might get picked up too, would seem more interesting.

Yea, truckers are notoriously shady people... One piece of advice I did leave out: you're going to California in the summer. It won't be hard to find a fellow hitchhiker who's heading at least to LA. I highly recommend this. You may find it harder to get a ride with two people, but it is significantly safer.

Don't be nervous about it. It has its risk, but it's an experience I recommend to everyone at least once in their life.

But California will be more expensive methinks. Sad Don't hitchhikeee, maybe ask friends for a little bit of cash, like Taxer suggested, and try to book a cheap flight or something.. not a one way, but one with 2 or 3 stops maybe?

As much as I hate Disney (you have no idea) I remember the 101 Dalmations before they shredded it and trust me when I say an internet mates call to arms rally can work. I know because I have seen it work! I am in Scotland and used to be a member of a parenting site/forum and when a member who lived in Norway was dumped by her louse of a husband for someone else she was literally up the creek, alone with no money, a 6 year old and 4 months pregnant! So we went to work to bring her home to England, She dumped his car at the port used the one way ticket that mysteriously was waiting at the ferry terminal, when she got off the boat she spent the first night on the nearest to the dock she landed at. It was 3 days of sleeping in e-friends beds and by the time she arrived at her sisters which was 400 miles from that first night, not only did she and her little one have a lot of new clothes (well nearly new) and just about everything she needed for a new baby!

Random Acts of Human Kindness! can't beat them.

She eventually ended up back in Norway after all the legalities of her kids citizenship was sorted and the Norwegians seperated her husband not only from the house he had kicked her out of. (well moving girlfriend into their bed while she slept on her own sofa is about as near to a kicking out as you get we thought!) They also managed to make him pay towards his childrens lives and she is now a very happy single mum of two just getting by like everyone else.

We saw someone we could help and like the dogs in 101 Dalmations we barked out a relay cry for help and passed it down the country! (oh an the reason I hate Disney? they bought that site and a year later closed it down!)

Just see who your e-friends between you and your girlfriend are. One of them might drive you 50 miles to someone they know would love to hear a song, pick up small gigs along the way, you give some of your time to some elderly peoples community or a small towns church funday? Well those are Random Acts of Human Kindness too and those tend to get repaid like for like!

Most people think no way when I tell that story but I swear it's true! There are a lot of nasty people out there, I should know I've come across a fair few in my time but it isn't until you find just a few of the majority of good people you get to see a small glimpse of how great our world could be! Your country is bigger than mine so statistically your prospects of success in finding more good people are greater and if the many good people who my husband I met in the USA in September 2001 are any indication of that you will get the girl! You could even make the next big 'against all odds chick flick with the fairytale ending!'
Social Networking Save Love!
(just don't sell the rights to Disney! lol)

Good Luck

Cath x

You might wanna try Craiglist.com. Some people might need their car shipped & don't want to pay many fees or are moving cross country themselves.

But that only works if you have a valid driver's license & a good driving record. And granted too if there's anyone who is going in the same direction as you are, ect.

I'm with bloodbeast, pawn off shit you don't need & just get whatever cash you can get, get a job since summer is already here & places generally hire around this time. That way you can get a plane ticket or ride the train.

Been trying Craigslist and pawning and shit, no one wants it xD, all I have is an amp and a bass, my guitar and some clothes, and I am NOT getting rid of my guitar.

Also, I am playing Final Fantasy 6 right now \o/
