PostSubject: Dies Irae's Daily Dose   Fri May 06, 2011 4:46 pm

Welcome to the daily dose. Here I will attempt to listen to a new song/album every day (in theory, not going to happen in practice!) and give my scathing or adoring feedback and post a suitable link for you to enjoy.

Today's dose features a certain favourite of mine, Insomnium and their latest single 'Weather the Storm':

The one thing I can fault them for is that Niilo has never been the greatest vocalist and they have a tendency to have him low in the mix, meaning his less than perfect grunts lack any real power.

On the plus side, they continue to write fantastic melodies, providing a great atmosphere and something different to what is usually a pretty boring sub-genre. Friman just has a knack for great song writing, it seems effortless for them tp create these amazing songs.

8/10.

I've already heard and downloaded this. I'm really enjoying it. Really fantastic song. Mikael Stanne's guest vocals go down a treat too.

I really like their new single. I knew it would be good though, coming off of their last effort. They have really hit the peak of their career I think so I'm hoping they'll have a few more brilliant albums left in them

What to post, what to post. Hmm, well I guess we'll go with what I was to while working this morning:

I love this band, they're the personification of all things chill. You don't expect stuff like trumpets in this kind of thing, but it really works. Amazing melodies and the mood they create is trance inducing, I really get caught up on it. The fact that the music doesn't really go anywhere is okay, because I don't need it to, I'm just happy to float with what's going on... then they bring the crunch 7 minutes in, you don't expect it. Awesome for clearing your mind while you work.

I was prepared to dislike this from the off, for as much as I love Enslaved their past two albums were sub-par. However I find myself enjoying their new EP rather a fucking lot.

They've mellowed to the point were calling them even progressive black metal isn't really viable, because aside from the token vocals there aren't any BM elements anymore, something I find I don't mind, because whereas the last few efforts wound up reaching up their own arses for no reason, the progressiveness here is smooth, the writing fantastic and the whole affair seems like it's going somewhere. For a band who constantly move forward you can forgive them from taking the wrong path once in a while if they produce material like this when they find the right track again.

My faith in Enslaved is restored: 8.5/10.

Shit. No, that's not fair: if another band had released this I would be saying it's decent enough, but this is Shining, a band who made two fucking masterpieces in Halmstad and The Eerie Cold. Material of this standard is just not acceptable from them.

Yes, it's solid-ish: I didn't click with it for some reason.

Still, it's a lot better than all the djent shit that passes for progressive metal these days.

To be honest this year has been underwhelming. Protest the Hero, Grayceon and one or two others are the only good things I've heard.

heard the new scale the summit album? it is quite pleasing to the ear holes.

BTBAM's The Parallax Ep was fucking amazing. definitely good stuff from 2011. devin townsends deconstruction is a great thought, im still getting more into it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61-GPLoY5bI&feature=related

as far as the PtH album, i was underwhelmed. rody was nearly un-listenable. their songs were much more chaotic (which i guess is their own "thing" ) but it wasnt as good as Fortress. meh, i think i was expecting too much and hearing rody put the emphasis on everything incorrectly strayed my interests.

i would laugh if those were the "one or two others"

The new Devin Townsend is awful, just like most of his material.

Djent mixed with shit vocals (which is unforgivable because he has an amazing clean voice), random spazz, some psuedo industrial touchs and just plain bad song writing. Everything wrong with modern prog.

But I seem to be the odd out as everyone else worships him.

i dont worship devin. i think that his life story is compelling, and he as part of Devin Townsend Project, is his best work. Im actually not a SYL fan or much of the early DT stuff. Ki is outright wonderful, and addicted! is great collection of rock songs. his idea to do 4 albums in 4 styles is pretty unique i think. other than that....he's just some dude....

Yes, finding good modern prog is like a t-rex trying to pleasure himself. deal with my random simile.

Im finding that djent is a particularly interesting "musical" category. Like with all genres...there is a whole lotta crap and some great bands. Since djent is still relatively new, it's being "defined"...meaning there is a shit-storm of poor quality bands. there are some good ones in there...ill keep you posted when i find one XD (periphery is pretty solid in my eyes). As much as i hate to say it, animals as leaders helped to start this, what with the lowtuned 8 string emg melodic structured stuff....but then it kinda grew wild in the hands of teenagers....lord help us.

I really do not like the "oh it just started out so it's justified that there are some shitty bands in the style" argument. Take a look at early black metal and death metal bands. Did they suck? No, they're all innovators and bands that will stand the test of time. Why can't the same be said of metal/death-core and djnet? Because they suck.

Chugga chug chug chuga chug. Djnet djent dj-djent dj-dj-djent.

Taxer brings up a valid point. I think all of those genres sound great if they're done right, but the problem is too much of it is done wrong for me to care. But I've not actually listened to much DT so I can't really form an opinion. I should problem check him out since I'll be going to see him in July

To be fair my problem isn't so much with Djent as a sub-genre (yes, it's pretty bad as a whole, but a few bands make it work like Tesseract). My gripe is more to do with bands that claim to be progressive just because of their guitar tone and a few syncopated riffs... I just don't buy into it, I want more from a band if they want to be deemed as 'progressive'.

I like Devin but I haven't heard the new album yet. If what Dies says is true, then I probably won't like it. I am kinda looking forward to Ghost though because honestly some of his best work is the stuff that isn't metal (Ki and Accelerated Evolution).

Man I haven't listened to this album in an age: this is what go me into black metal. For the longest time I hated BM, I was a death metal nut, constantly rediculing acts like Mayhem their lack of muscianship and generally being pointless crap. Immortal showed me the error of my ways with their amazing riffs...I was drawn in like a moth to the flame and was forever changed.

10/10 (Nostalgia glasses may be blurring my vision but even without them it's still an 8.5 easy).

Pretty much the perfect progdeath album, done Atheist style, with amazing riffs, awesome bass... pretty much brilliant everything. I can't do the album justice with mere words, just listen and enjoy.

9.5/10

Chiming in on the DT discussion.

I like Ghost. Haven't listened to Deconstruction yet.

Still an unapologetic fan.

That albums is a masterpiece. Perfect everything. And that is easily one of the best black metal tracks of all time, it has some of the most mouth watering riffs

Both are awesome. I expect nothing less than genius from Townsend.

Creepmime sounds very good. It's time I take a look at the other things you've posted.

I was really looking forward to this, but nothing's changed since IaFA, which on paper doesn't sound so bad, but it lacks the impact and originality of that record, meaning it seems a little flat to be honest. It could well be a grower however I'm not inclined to listen to it enough to give it a chance based on what I've heard.

I really don't like the term avant-garde metal

dark cabaret? i got nothing else. its a hodge-podge genre. i think it works if nothing else. otherwise i would be saying jazz-opera-swing-dark cabaret, neo-romantic metal, or something like that. TOO LONG im sticking with avante-garde unless people come up with a cooler term.
