In Flames - Jester Race through Colony, then get the first album. Stop after that.
Dark Tranquillity - Get everything, but start with The Gallery, Damage Done, and Character

That's pretty much all you need from the genre because every melodeath band apes the aforementioned bands

They got the biggest bases covered (glad to see another fan of Crystalic)
here are a few decently unique ones I quite enjoy

(With a touch of metalcore, but done right)

(Everyone calls them a Bodom clone, but two out of their three best albums sound nothing like them. And they are much, much better in my opinion)
(a fairly recent discovery, brilliant band)
(Cool atmosphere)

Been a fan of Kalmah for quite a while, Byd, and Axe, I'm currently adoring Omnium Gatherum's new album. They were actually the band that kind of kicked off this binge for me. I will listen to the rest soon though.

Probably the best melodic death album ever made, at least in my opinion, and yet I still always seem to forget about them... one of those bands that were just destined to remain underrated no matter how freaking awesome they were.

I've already heard that album. I didn't like it much at the time but it was a long time ago. I might appreciate it more now.

But more importantly, where the fuck, good sire, have you been?

there was a seemingly endless pile of new threads that i didnt care about all started by the same people with the same topics with the same everything. im not evolved by any means, but i feel as though the forum and i have grown apart. I still really like metal, but im listening to less of it.
plus, i feel like all the people i wanted to talk to...left, or they were busy. i kinda drifted away....

meh....whateves. speaking of taxer's good calls, im listening to his Gallowbraid recommendation yet again, and it is still great

Let's add a little tech to the mix (the last 2 minutes of this song is orgasmic, the riff is perfection):

There have been a boat load of Arsis clones, but some of the melodies these guys knock out are rediculous, they outstrip their peers by some distance.

Then let's add a touch of prog, as an Opeth fan I know you are going to love this Darkflame, though most people will know them already:

I can't get on board with them personally: I either end up wishing I was listening to Opeth or Swallow the Sun depending on the song, because while BE are decent enough, they never match their inspiriation.

I just noticed VR posted Fractal Gates: that song is such a con. It's the only fucking decent song on the album. Great use of melody and atmosphere but the rest of the album is generic rubbish.

I've got more stuff I can post if you're still looking Darkflame?

Do you have Cybion by Kalisia BTW? I saw Axe was listening to it before and it reminded me you may be the only person here who doesn't own that masterpiece.

Same opinion as above. Kind of generic, but likable if you're in the taste/mood for it. Except you're full of shit when you say you found Fractal Gates. I was the first to post them here, back before you even joined the forum.

And no, I don't, but I've heard many a good thing about them. I think I remember listening to them a while back and enjoying it, but it might have been Katatonia. I get them confused for some reason.

Youtube link is pretty useless because Cybion is one 70 minute long song, and any extract just wouldn't do it justice.

Rather than just melodeath (I've already added tech/prog) why not go for death metal that is melodic. There is a difference:

I would just put it all into a playlist & listen to it nonstop. Delete the tracks that you don't really like. I try to remember the stuff i dl or get & play them more often.

I found a few good melodeath bands by doing that.

Ceremonial Perfection, Universum, This Ending.

Also if you haven't already check out some Insomnium if you like more of the melodic style. I personally like the first 2 albums by them the most then, Above The Weeping World & Across the Dark would be my next choice.

I prefer early In Flames but both had great beginnings... DT obviously held onto quality far better though as they've never released a truly bad album (though their last effort wasn't great): In Flames suck donkey dick these days, which is a shame to see a former great band fall from grace.

Dark Tranquillity just blows In Flames out of the sky, their newest release alone does better, but even they are heading into treacherous waters. Dark Flame, just download Lunar Strain, Subterranean (sp?), Jester Race & Whoracle. If you enjoyed them go for Colony & (maybe) Clayman. After that they decided to sound completely Alternative Rock/metal. Why they couldn't just rename themselves to No Inflames or some other name is beyond me. It sucks when a band changes their style & keeps the same goddamn name! fight

This pretty much. Get everything up until and including Colony. If you like that, then you can get Clayman if you want but that's when they start to lose quality.

Clayman, Come Clarity, Colony. in that order. All great in my eyes
Yes, Dark Tranquility definitely won the longevity battle. Stanne is amazing. "THIS HERE IS THE LESSER FAITH!!!!!"

Byd, this is how it starts, you know. One day it's "I like Blink 182", the next it's "I think I like men".

I might just get Dark Tranquillity's entire discography. That and Be'lakor's other album, they are pretty damn amazing too. I'll probably look into some In Flames after that.
