Put it this way. Do you honestly think Mikael Akerfeldt sits at home thinking about ways to subtley imply how awesome his band is to people. The depth you're looking into it is slightly ridiculous. There's no way he thinks that much about how he promotes his music. Like LOR said, any band of a certain status has no choice but to say nothing but positive things about their music publicly, no matter what they may think of it personally.

I really doubt it, man. From what it sounds like, I'm being cast a skeptic for no reason when I've done nothing but turn heads to evidence, and I don't think ridiculous to imply that somebody's full of themselves when they have been on occasion if that's the topic of conversation. If this is what we can call nitpicking, then we're effectively nitpicking my own opinion of a man versus the man, which is a massive double standard if memory serves me right. It's also called cross examination, but I'm not being sued for having an opinion. Or maybe I will get sued - who knows?

I realize the point you and him made to me. However, Mikael Akerfeldt is speaking Mikael Akerfeldt's mind when he's in those interviews, probably with very little to no moderation from RR. He loves his music and makes no secret of it. That's fine, but to cast the idea that only authentic, true music listeners will "get" you is a burning bridge, do you not agree?

Why could, at the turn of the millenium, Blind Guardian make all the ridiculous jokes and gaffes on stage and still kick ass, while we have this bumbling going on now? I know it's a different genre, but they're likable because they're human.

Daylight Dies are a doom metal band. They're all gloom and doom and depression, but they (with Katatonia the former, before Night is the New Day) did crazy shit like the "ice bang" videos and make their own beer, and aren't afraid to call shots like they see them. They've got a sense of humor. Devin Townsend's whole fucking career is another prime example of somebody prominent in music that can all the while talk themselves up but push different directions than their own ego drama. Opeth don't have that and when they do it's elitism; not funny or invoking or engaging with their fans. I would accuse Agalloch of it if I didn't know their side projects, which is where they channel a fair amount of their humor (blackened or not) and alternative opinions on anything aren't far from them.

There's being multidimensional and then there's the monotonous sing-song about your career, life, style, et cetera. I doubt the man is sitting at home with his pipe lit thinking about how to market his music towards fanboys and subtly jab at those that don't appreciate Opeth, but he isn't being quiet about the market he's pushing or the label he's on.

It's fine to be a capitalist and it's fine to have capitalist fans but the last time I heard a record that was built on capital I got this band called System of a Down, who all the while renounced capitalism despite becoming filthy rich on the way in. I'm not accusing Opeth of wanting to become money hounds but with the way their fans act, it's as if you could get away with making the same record 4 times and calling it something different to generate revenue. There has to be a stigma for that and the music alone didn't do it; hence the argument.

If this is such a controversial opinion, I have the capacity to leave it. The reason I continue to talk about is it because it's relevant and there's evidence. If this doesn't mean a thing, then my time's been effectively wasted and I'm one of the very few that bother to dissent when they deem it necessary with other people who would offer relevant information past "I like them for ___" versus the argument of why the community (see: not all of you guys are suck-ass morons that buy anything you see, I'm sure. I'm talking about the Opeth listening fan shit that we've seem to agreed upon across the board) thinks they're so untouchable, not the value Opeth have to you or what sort of a man Mikael Akerfeldt is.

My fault if I've offended you with my otherwise outlandish statements.

Following that example, no argument should be made because all arguments are whining.

Therefore, Opeth are a good band.

Yeah, I'm done, Raul. I'll try not to make any topics like this again.

Meh. Fair enough. I still disagree but this won't go anywhere so I won't drag it out needlessly.

Nitpicking? The dude's basically sleeping with the Tool guy. I think if I had a few rounds in the sack with Maynard, I'd come off pretentious and unimpressive too. For the record, I expect this joke to be used against me sometime in the future.

Read Kerrang! There are plenty of opportunities (especially recently) where he'll shed this for the conveniently cautious behavior he's displaying concerning the recent Heritage (and Opeth's descent into becoming Porcupine Tree's doppelgangers), but the man barks much louder than he bites.

Honestly though, I care very minutely for the presentation of the band other than making it a point that he's done nothing to help cull the rabid fan base they tend to attract and craft their opinions like adults rather than "yes, I am your God."

Somewhat related:

if petrucci had actually said those things, i would start worshipping as my god. and taxer, i faintly recall you saying you liked opeth so i guess this means you love ICP.

Well I'm proud to say that I finally got around to listening to an album by them today. Not bad.

I got bored of Opeth like 2-3 years ago and can't bear to listen to anything by them anymore. They're a cool intro band though, I'll give them that.

They're not bad musicians, their music is just putting too much cross genres into one songb and it doesn't work and make them seem egotistical.

Opeth is a good band. Not a great band, but good. I'd see them live if given the chance (although I've missed them twice now, once with goddamnmotherfucking KATATONIA!!!!!)

But I digress.... rarely listen to them
