depends how you want to learn, i would find a teacher. some books have probably a more musical approach (teach you notes rather then patterns first which will take more time if you are unfamiliar with music theory and whatnot but obviously worth it) or others might just go straight to guitar things. you have to go check em out. but having an instructor would help you improve alot faster

Yeah, an intructor is definitely the way to go. I had one that taught me all the basics then basically taught myself from then on and I found that was a good way to go about it, but it may be different with you depending on what you want to play etc. Don't go listening to those people who say "Yeah I just taught myself with YouTube videos and had no problems" because they're all idiots. Teaching yourself only gets you so far and there's a reason those lessons are free. I'm having some real problems right now because I can't find any way to progress past the level I'm at and I'm thinking about getting a more advanced intructor to teach me new stuff.

If you're really wanting to go for it, I'm not gonna lie, it takes a lot of time, money and effort but it's so so worth it once you get going with it. Very Happy

I'm completely self taught: I found teachers too restrictive.

It all depends on how good your ear is, innate talent and what you want to get out of it.

Books are inherently bad at teaching guitar though, as pictures/tab does little to show you technique/style etc.

Lessons are the way to go for most people, otherwise I'd look at http://www.guitarworld.com/lessons/guitar-basics

Think of a guitarist of note, such as Hendrix etc... whoever came to mind probably taught himself: most people who have a feel for it will teach themselves.

theres things though that are actually impossible to learn yourself just by ear. different techniques and so forth. even different approaches. you need teachers or videos at the very least for that

There are a few exceptions, but remembering the fact that Hendrix was pretty much a one in a million situation. The man was a godamn prodigy. In most cases, you'll need at least some lessons. Even if you've never had a teacher you've likely watched some videos or something to teach yourself certain techniques. I get where you're coming from about teachers being too restrictive, but sometimes you need to be forced to learn things you wouldn't normally set out to do. The main reason I'm at a block with my playing right now is that I don't know where to go because I don't know much about the actual theory of guitar. I just thought I'd never need it and couldn't really be bothered learning it. If I had a teacher forcing me to do it, sure I may not enjoy it at first, but the long term benefit would outweigh that.

100% self-taught, except for a few things my Dad has shown me. It's definitely the way to go. I was classically trained on Violin though so picking up the guitar was fairly easy, since I was already familiar with stringed instruments and had a grasp of music theory. I'm not the greatest player in the world, in fact i could be a lot better if I applied myself, but with the proper dedication self-teaching can be a great way to learn.

There is also some pretty decent beginner/intermediate equipment that is quite affordable. Try the Line 6 Spyder III amps

My guitar is a Dean Vendetta, it's a fairly cheap guitar all things considered, but man can it play...

I self taught myself to play, try just sitting and just fiddling with the insterment(getting a feel for it) and look up tabs for the songs you wanna play Guitar tabs are quite easy to understand and for some that are more combinded with there insterment It is possible to play by ear.Hmm...I'm quite intreguged mine giving me Equipment list's guitar players.
