PostSubject: Dies Irae's 2011 Hit List   Thu Mar 01, 2012 10:30 am

So this may be a little late, but here are all the albums (metal related anyway) I'd rate at 8/10 or above from last year:

Ulcerate - The Destroyers of All:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohM8JU-VcX0

Absu - Abzu:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljNhrwGnSrQ

Protest the Hero - Scurrilous:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOYLMmvjGk4

Oakhelm - Echtra:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ht4TI2itrXo

White Arms of Athena - Astrodrama:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPpTfqlERzE

Cormorant - Dwellings:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLaNL5_yg1g

Smohalla - Resilience:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0899QQKPiM0

The Atlas Moth - An Ache for the Distance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9h_au-NweY

Leprous - Bilateral:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxAIsZldltA

Corelia - Nostalgia:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOU0vs2pDBI

Grayceon - All We Destroy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY_mO_QkcDc

Rwake - Rest:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXE2WbmznUU

Last Chance to Reason - Level 2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rxnTPfyoTY

Skeletonwitch - Forever Abomination:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhAvQcweR-g

Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjKyzwqIT7s

Taake - Noregs Vaapen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuX1pyaf2pY

There were a bunch of albums that I'd score 7/10 like Dead in the Dirt's Fear, Gridlink's Orphan and most of the black metal albums from last year, but the above are the only albums that really caught my attention.

I was seriously tempted to put Dissimulation by HftD in this list, but it's a 7.5 in reality, though that's fucking amazing for a christian metalcore band. Man I'm so scene these days: so much math/tech/core.

I really wanted to like Carnival is Forever, but it just didn't work for me. I can understand a band moving in a slightly different direction, but I just wanted Decapitated to make Winds of Creation 2.0 which isn't fair on them but that's how I feel.

good list. i loved abzu. only gave protests new album a quick listen when my friend put it on in the car. sounded pretty good though i need to give it another chance. im listening to oakhelm now. another band i really never gave a chance. but i like what im hearing.

randomly clicked on rwake also. pretty neat too.

and also cormorant.... fuck me, ive heard talk about these guys alot here i think, never listened to them... this is sweat.

im gonna show my friends those techish bands. not my thing though. but i think some of my friends will dig it. like corelia.

I agree with everything on that list that I've heard. I was definitely a big fan of Abzu and Forever Abomination, although there were a few things about the later that bothered me. Still a great record!

I noticed you didn't have One For Sorrow on there though, what did you think of that?

A fine album, that would ordinarily warrant a spot on this list: I thought it was the same amazing Insomnium at first. However after listening further it just seems like AtD 2.0, which is good and all but it doesn't define itself enough to be a truly great album. I wish I could list it just for those melodies...

I forgot Edge of the Earth by Sylosis: should definitely be on the list.

I wasn't expecting Insomnium to do anything radical. The album is just more of the same....but man, "the same" in Insomnium's case is pretty sweet.

I liked Protest's new album but I didn't think it quite came to par with Fortress or Kezia. It's still quite great though, I've picked up a few favourites from it. I'm going to see them next week actually. It will be schaweet. Very Happy

If you like PtH check out Corelia and Today I Caught the Plague: 2 amazing bands. Corelia's vocalist sounds quite like Roddy Walker doing his cleans.
