PostSubject: Demon's Souls / Dark Souls   Sat Jul 21, 2012 6:36 am

I finished Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. Both games were pretty fun. I didn't want them to have a huge RPG feel because it's just such a time-suck. Demon's Souls was the most enjoyable for the time spent, but Dark Souls had more gameplay. I feel like playing challenging games lately. Catherine looks fun. wipEout HD looks fun. Others look fun. In Demon's Souls and Dark Souls I used dex/int builds. Basically dex + ninja status + super insane temporary buff to make bosses cry. + die in one hit hahaha. Sometimes.

I'm actually playing demon souls right now. I've beaten level 2, 3 and 4. I cannot get passed the blue dragon and the 5th level is so godamn dark and boring- I'm not a fan lol.
I'll go back to it eventually

Catherine is a great game, plays with your morals. Buy it

I hate the 5th level! There is an area like that in Dark Souls too, and it's even worse. To get past the blue dragon you just have to run at the right time. Youtube should help. It's annoying having to go past all the tough enemies to try again though.

Catherine looks great. I'll have to buy it some time before summer ends hopefully. It looks really challenging, and I like games that put an emphasis on story + music.

If you liked Demon's Souls, then you'll probably like Dark Souls. It's more fleshed out with things like weapon upgrades and armor upgrades. It's way more balanced because you get a limited number of potions at each "checkpoint", and each time you visit a checkpoint all the enemies respawn. It's a lot harder to be cheap. Finishing it is also going to take you quite a bit longer, and you can't warp around until late game so you'll have to go everywhere on foot. Luckily, you can usually create shortcuts to make things easier. It's still a lot of travel time though, especially when you're not sure where to go. The difficulty is about the same IMO, although I made things a lot harder by using a difficult character build (no shield + put tons of stats into intelligence which didn't help until late game).

If you think playing Demon's Souls a bunch more sounds tiring, then you might not enjoy it as much. If you're hungry for more, then it will serve well. I think the only complaints I've seen by some...the atmosphere isn't as thick, the frame rate drops in some areas. Things like that. I didn't have real issues with the frame rate during the game, but it does drop in some areas.

I think so. I think the way it works now is that if you screw with NPCs they'll hate you, but you can buy forgiveness. It's relatively expensive though. If you kill an NPC then they are gone forever. To get into human form you use an item called Humanity, and then select a special option at a bonfire. You can farm it...there's no limit. You can use Humanity for other things too, like increasing the number of flasks (healing items) you get at a checkpoint (a bonfire).

I've been quite tempted to try the games for a while but I'm slightly scared by how hard they supposedly are...but I am a huge fan of RPGs and do like a decent challenge. It just wouldn't be convenient if I ended up embedding my controller into my TV...

Its not THAT hard. Its far from a walk in the park but I've played more bullshit games before. Most games on hard mode are harder than Demon Souls

Think of most games as easy games, and this one is medium difficulty. It'll force you to put in some effort and time, but it's not punishingly hard. You'll die a lot, so you'll need some patience. That's the way games used to be though. You were supposed to die a lot.

I was gonna buy it a while ago but for some reason didn't....I'll probably pick it up at some point. It sounds too interesting to pass off. I love a game with a good challenge so long as that challenge is fair, and not just a cheap trick that makes you die a lot. The feeling of achievement once you finally beat something you found impossible before is so rewarding.

This is the stage I'm at
You need to buy 180 arrows to shoot at a guy for about 5 minutes to advance
You need to run past a dragon at a perfect timing or you'll die in one hit
Then you can start fighting a boss
If the boss gets a grab in he makes you go down a LEVEL
If you die you gotta do it all again

I go down two levels every time so far

I'm pretty sure this is the hardest part of the game.

I mean the preparation for this fight is insane. 180 arrows are not cheap. Plus you need to kill several guys before you can even start shooting the dragon.

Then the attempt requires you to play your best game for a long period of time

If you fail it's going to take forever to repair your armour, get the levels back and buy arrows.

I am going to feel amazing after beating it though. And that is what demon souls is about. You overcome fucking insane odds and afterword you feel like a huge weight has been lifted. I feel like I've made a huge mistake not putting ANY effort into magic. I admit that I've killed two bosses in a really fucking cheap way using Youtube videos.

You always go with magic. Mage classes are always the absolute best way to play any RPG.
