Hey guys! Do ya'll know of some good doom stoner and sludge metal? I already like Witch Mountain, Om, Shrinebuilder, Down, Electric Wizard and The Wandering Midget so where to go from here?
Also what's the difference between these three genres?

i listen to more doom than the other stuff. uhm, my knowledge is telling me doom is generally darker sounding...maybe also more "metal" whatever that means, just because i see doom being mixed more frequently with death and black metal. stoner stuff seems to have fuzzier guitar tone, less brutal (sure, why not)...and more stoner....y...? yeah, ill stick with that for now.

i feel like i know the difference when i hear it, but i cant really put it into words.

You should give Orange Goblin, Mastadon, Baroness and maybe Kylesa a shot.

Doom, Stoner Metal and Sludge are heavily blurred subgenres. The distinct differences are lyrical themes and vocalism.

Sludge borrows the slow, heavy bass/guitar of doom. Then, it adds a flurry of discordant, screeching guitar - punctuated by painfully sharp, distorted vocals. The drums vary the rhythm and keep the song structure rolling along. You'll know it's sludge because it sounds filthy by nature.

This is textbook sludge.

Stoner metal is very similar to sludge in composition. Yet, instead of typical metal themes such as pain, death, misery, rage or fear, stoner metal features surrealist landscapes usually featuring less .... awfulness. The other distinguished feature is that the vocals are often more rounded and mellow in stoner metal.

There's not much point knowing the differences, though. These subgenres mix wonderfully and VERY often.

Nope, nope, and nope.

Doom is basically the entire sub-genre that covers all slow sounding metal, having its roots back in early Black Sabbath.

Stoner Metal basically follows the bluesy heavy metal style that is seen in early Sabbath and makes it a bit heavier if you will and combines it with drug related lyrical themes. Some of it is a bit faster than your traditional doom.

Sludge is a lot like stoner metal except add in some hardcore influences here and there along with harsh vocals and more gloominess. Also the best sludge has a lot of feedback.

Thats exactly what I said, except I forgot to mention Black Sabbath and stoner blues influences. Annoying as you are, I have a question. How did you find Boris? I've been searching for their music for weeks. There are so many other bands called Boris, that I don't know where to look.

@Abe - Witch Mountain's awesome. Have you heard their song, Plastic Cage?

This is Big Business. One-hit wonder, but great sludge.

Another little-known gem

Thanks for hitting up doom Taxer, I'm pretty sadly lacking in that area and for bringing up Iron Monkey for the fucking life of me I could not remember their damn name. I lost so much music when my old computer crashed.

I don't know, I just kinda did. They do change their sound a lot though, so that might add to the confusion.

That's their entire discography and it covers many different genres. My favorite albums are Amplifier Worship, Pink, Heavy Rocks I and II, Absolutego, Akuma No Uta, Flood, Feedbacker, Altar, Dronevil, and Smile.
