Pale Folklore on Exodus.

Waiting for people to shit on me for my Agalloch worship. I would link my Lodestone but it seems SE is behind on updating that. Better they fix their server problem than deal with the cosmetic foolishness an over-glorified blog offers, but I digress.

What's wrong with Agalloch worship? They will go down as a defining band of a genre

I'm convinced Agalloch have embraced this terrible affliction that insists they try to regress in production in the name of sounding cult and true to their roots. They did this after Ashes Against the Grain for reasons I can only hazard to guess - perhaps that they were becoming too "clean," or that they believed themselves straying from the message they wished to convey.

Agalloch can be Agalloch and all will be well, but naturally I prefer bands that choose defiance of boundary and they were that once and never again. This is why Pale Folklore is so important to me; it is a testament to their onset to rewrite the definition of metal, to which they excelled without peer in that time. For all of their triumphs, they've brought little to the table in terms of challenging content since Ashes, save a few tracks on Marrow of the Spirit. I understand this is all just opinionated bellyaching, but I remain firm in my assertion that they did more when they were less resilient to the industry.

I see your point, although I don't think that's the whole story. I for one would have been incredibly disappointed if they tried to make a Mantle 2 or even an Ashes 2... those albums both had a defining character all their own. They could write material and have it be more similar to Pale Folklore, but I don't think they want to compete with themselves. I've thought of them as taking steps forward or steps to the side each time they release something. Other than the early days, they don't have any two albums or EPs that sound alike. And, while I think their most recent material is the most... (i hesitate to use this term.) generic, I think the sound was because it's something they wanted to do. I'll bet whenever they release something new it won't be anything like it. Or it will be, and I will be just totally wrong lol

They still play with the folk meets metal paradigm and alter it every so slightly to achieve their ends. I don't want to see another The Mantle or another Ashes Against the Grain. I don't believe these records should be recreated because they're classics in their own rite already. What is missing is that left turn into neofolk or dark ambient; the haunting bleakness accented with Agalloch's ace musicianship and wit. They seem to have forsaken this for a homogenized "we're black metal now, deal with it" approach. I don't like it and I'll be the first to get in line and say it, but I don't mean for Agalloch to change their ways for my own insight. I'll just listen to groups that are taking this formula and pushing it further. Bands like Fen, the Morningside, and Černá, just to name a few.

On topic, I found the Lodestone link: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/character/2916504/

The production on Marrow of the Spirit is their best so far considering that prior to that they were pretty much using Line 6 PODs and shit drum machines for recording. It's not my favorite output of their's for sure, but it sounds better once you develop an ear for such things.

Drum machines? Was a single drum machine used on an Agalloch record? For some reason, I doubt this...

That said, the production quality on Ashes Against the Grain was a lot better than Marrow of the Spirit, recording be damned. They did a damn good job mixing and mastering that record whereas with Marrow they chose to allow the atmosphere to dominate. That's not to say none of that post-production went into it after the fact. Hell, even The Mantle sounded better when it came to that.
